state Republican Party $650,000 on Oct. 23 and the same day the party gave Walker more than $450,000. That was allowed under a court ruling that determined the state's limit on political action committee dona- tions was unconstitutional. Obama campaigns for Burke President Barack Obama campaigned for Burke in Milwaukee on Tuesday at North Division High School. "The eyes of the country are on us," Burke said as she introduced the president to a packed gymnasium. Obama, whose wife Michelle also cam- paigned for Burke recently, told the audi- ence that "the country as a whole is doing better. Wisconsin's not doing so good. Over the next week you have a chance to change that. You have a chance to choose a gover- nor who doesn't put political ideology first." Walker and U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan on Monday criticized the visit. Ryan, R-Janesville, said Obama came to Wisconsin because he knows Burke will be "just like him" if elected. "Mary Burke is nothing more than Barack Obama from Wisconsin," Ryan said at an early vote rally in Waukesha. "I do feel the wind is at our backs as Republicans, but the Democrats ... are trying to break our momentum with a tidal wave of money." During a campaign stop in the City of Pewaukee, Walker said Obama and former President Bill Clinton were campaigning for Burke because of the message it would send if he were victorious. "The reason they (in Washington) don't like what we've done here in Wisconsin is that we've taken the power out of the spe- cial interests and put it firmly in the hands of the taxpayers, and so they've targeted us since that last recall," said Walker. Scott Trindl, Waukesha County Democratic Party campaign office manag- er, said Obama and Clinton were throwing their support behind Burke because "they believe in what she stands for — real finan- cial reform, not a made-up surplus." Trindl also blamed Walker for the tone the state's political rhetoric has taken. "I have never seen the acrimony that is here now since Governor Walker has been in office," he said. All down to the turnout? Ryan said he will be crisscrossing the state with Walker over the next week, encouraging residents to get out and vote early. "Look, the governor is going to win, he just needs to execute and get people to the polls," he said. "What he needs to do is just keep doing what he is doing — keep spread- ing his message, keep telling people who he is and what he will do, just as he did in his first term." Walker said Burke was choosing to cam- paign heavily in the liberal strongholds of Milwaukee and Madison for fear her base won't show up at the polls on Election Day. Trindl didn't dispute that turnout is a concern, but said the party is working to change that. "The history shows that some Democratic voters don't show up for these elections," he said. "We want to get the message out that even Democratic voters that don't vote in these elections, it is still important to get out and not to be as divi- sive as it is now." October 31, 2014 • Milwaukee County Post • 3 Election: Millions raised as race enters final week continued from Page 1 Burke Obama Final MU poll shows Walker, Schimel in lead Post Staff MILWAUKEE — The final Marquette University Law School poll before Tuesday's election shows Gov. Scott Walker with his largest lead of the race among likely voters. The poll, released Wednesday, has Walker up 50 percent to 43 percent over Democrat Mary Burke. The previous poll showed the race was statistically tied. Walker has had a lead just once in the poll since March. Burke hasn't led. The poll sampled 1,164 likely voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 per- centage points. It was conducted between Oct. 23 and Oct. 26. The poll also showed the first statistical difference in the attorney general race. Republican Waukesha County District Attorney Brad Schimel led Democrat Susan Happ, the Jefferson County district attorney, by a 4 percentage point margin at 43-39. The results for both races show how important turnout will be to the outcome. Among registered voters, both races are sta- tistically tied. Waukesha County Democratic Party campaign office manager Scott Trindl was quick to point out Tuesday that if turnout is similar to the 2010 governor's race, Republicans will likely win. If the electorate is like the presidential election in 2012, Democrats would come out on top.
