The Milwaukee Post

October 31, 2014 • Milwaukee County Post • 7 Did Police Chief Ed Flynn do the right thing by firing office Christopher Manney? "As much as I respect Chief Flynn, I think he blew it by firing Officer Manney. He was in a split-second, life-or-death scenario with an unsupervised and mentally challenged individ- ual. (Where was the family's responsibility?) With possible litigation resulting in yet another massive lawsuit against the city and its taxpay- ers, I think Manney became a heavy liability and therefore a scapegoat to ease the tension that has been building in this case. Just how are the present and future officers of the law going to react in similar situations if their job and actions will be in jeopardy? Chief Flynn: Reinstate offi- cer Manney." — Joseph Zmuda Milwaukee "I believe the chief was totally wrong on that. What if the officer hadn't patted down the per- son involved and the person had a gun and started shooting? That is a likely possibility these days. Also, how to do you tell if a person is mentally ill?" — Michael Bourdo Milwaukee "Police Chief Edward Flynn did not do the right thing by firing officer Christopher Manney. All it was was to shut the black people up. On top of it, they will get it as a white-on-black crime but when black people go after black people, it's fine. — Pam Rozanski Milwaukee "We don't know if it was the right thing to fire that police officer. If indeed it was yes, if it was for political reasons, no. Not enough is known about the case. It's just that it's very hard to fire a public employee. If the firing stands, yes I back Flynn." — Noah Borkenhagen Franklin This week's question Is it time for Chief Edward Flynn to move on from his position? Question of the week LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Walker's reforms working To the editor: Many dishonest ads are being run by Mary Burke's campaign, the left-wing Greater Wisconsin Committee, and others. A GWC ad attacks Governor Walker on the issue of equal pay for women. PolitiFact rated claims about equal pay as False, stating, Wisconsin's "protections against gender discrimination in work- place pay date back decades." But that doesn't stop the GWC from lying. Their claim that women earn less for doing the same work has been debunked many times. Their claim that it's easier for corpora- tions to get away with paying women less is ridiculous. Burke and the GWC can't give one example where a corporation is "getting away" with paying women less since the repeal of the equal pay law. It's a lie. Pay discrimination remains illegal under the Wisconsin Fair Employment Act as it has been for decades. The law that was repealed, Act 20, did not establish an equal pay mandate. It sim- ply allowed trial lawyers to get richer. Another ad running from the GWC attacks Walker for supposedly not sup- porting family farms. The Volunteers for Agriculture, the political ar m of the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation, the Dairy Business Association, and the Wisconsin Cor n Growers Association, blasted the new ad in a statement, saying, "Farmers know manure when they see it! Wisconsin far mers know Gover nor Walker has been a strong advocate of the agriculture industry." Wisconsin voters know Burke is shovel- ing manure because she has no original ideas. Vote to re-elect Walker and Republicans. Their reforms are working. Larry Holterman Milton Vote Happ for attorney general To the editor: "Why can't a legislator press for legis- lation that benefits a person who has con- tributed to their campaign? Isn't that the essence of representative government?" That was Brad Schimel's response to why he did not investigate potentially unethical behavior by a fellow Republican in the Legislature. And this man wants to be attorney general for Wisconsin. If you are tired of this kind of attitude by our politicians, be sure to vote on Nov. 4 for Susan Happ. Dick Schultz Fort Atkinson See more letters on page 8 RUM 1.75L Mt.
