FISHING REPORT FISHING REPOR KOSA The Kosa retirees fished Lake Norman last week with John Black and Roger McNeilly getting the win. The pair brought in 11.90 and anchored that with a 2.90 largemouth, which was big fish of the day. Second place went to Tommy "where is my jacket" Wess and James Haynes with 5.30. Third place with 2.85 was George Crosswhite and Larry Melton. This week, the retirees fish Lake Wylie. Moss Lake Another round of big storms and a lot going on in Shelby, Thursday, kept many from fishing last Thursday night at Moss Lake. Only nine boats fished and again it was Brian and Cody Hoyle taking the win with 10.67, they also had big fish of the evening with a 2.54 largemouth. Donnie Beason and Chris Edwards had 2.43 and were second while J R. Garland and Ronnie Beason took third with 1.53. Fourth place went to Chris and Lee Hoyle with 1.29 and that was all the fish brought in. Bass Casters The Bass Casters fished Lake Rhodhiss starting at midnight last Saturday night and weighed in at 9 am Sunday morning. Clouds greeted everyone right from the start and a steady rain from about 3am til 8 am made it a long, long night. Bruce Camp got the win with 5.3, followed by Bubba Sprouse with 4.12. Brandon Scarborough had a single bass weighing 4.6 and took third as well as big bass of the night. Ricky McKenny was fourth with 2.14 and rounding out the top five was John Brown with 2.11. The next event will again be a night tournament starting at midnight til 9am, this time on Lake Norman on September 11. DEADLY TECHNIQUE Fluttering can be a deadly effective technique for catching big lazy bass and unlocking jaws clamped tighter than a lock box. Fluttering can be done directly below you, like jigging, or during the retrieve. Let the lure settle to the bottom and then, with a slight upward lift of your rod tip, snatch it off the bottom. Notice how the lure flutters into life, then settles back to the bottom. Do it repeatedly until you know precisely how little you can lift your rod tip and still get a flutter out of the lure. No two lures react precisely alike when it comes to fluttering. You must study each lure and remember what it takes to get the best fluttering action. Some require only the slightest twitch, while others take a pretty fair belt to get them to flutter. One of the shows I like to watch on occasion is called Whale Wars. It is the real-life adventure of those who are try- ing to stop Japanese merchant ships from killing whales in the name of re- search. According to the last episode, they may have won this war for good. I rejoiced with them. And while they may not understand a hunter being their ally; it perfectly fi ts into the real mindset of those who both kill and protect. It bothers me how that many educat- ed and talented people cannot under- stand that hunters have hearts and that the greatest majority of us are not inter- ested in the random killing of animals. For some reason, so called animal- rights groups cannot fathom that we could actually love animals and at the same time enjoy a good hunt. It seems that those who sometimes claim supe- rior education are really the ones who cannot appreciate the balance that our earth must have. Sure there are hunters and outfi tters who give us a bad name, but this is, by and far, the exception and not the rule. When properly understood, it is easy to compartmentalize the days I hunt and the days I provide and protect. I perfectly understand saving a whale or even a fawn and at the same time killing an elephant. I have learned that in the places where elephants are killed, they are not only in abundance, but they pro- vide food for many, many people. It is a balance that not only God has allowed for, but that fi sh and game departments have carefully weighed. I feel like that sometimes people see CAMPERS/RVs CAMPERS/RVs LARGE RV LOT with water, sewer hookups, country setting, storage facility included. $300 month. Gary Miller Aiming Outdoorsmen Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ oward Christ ting some surprise attack. They don't see me simply en- joying their presence as the non hunt- ers do. It really is ignorance. One of the persons who gets it is my own National Park superintendent. He not only protects animals for a living, but enjoys hunting with his sons. He never got on the bandwagon of those parks that were quick to ban guns while on his premises because he understood, among other things, that just because a man or women had a conceal carry permit; he was now a hardened, animal killing, criminal. Please, someone, grow some brains! I really wonder how much we all could accomplish if we worked at saving ani- mals together. I can tell you this; most of us hunters are ready and willing. But it will take the anti-hunter becoming in- stead, a non-hunter and understanding that hunting is not a barbaric tradition for the unlearned, but a necessary ac- tivity – and yes, even a necessary sport, that provides balance for this God-given creation we have been given steward- ship of. It's a shame that I don't know if I would have been a welcomed partner on the ship with those on Whale Wars, but I know this; me and my hunting friends would have been as passionate and courageous as the last man or women standing. I'm just afraid that in the pro- cess, we would have been forced to walk the plank. me watching deer and think I am plot- www..outdoortruths.org www outdoortruths.or CAMPERS/RVs SHELBY CAMPERS/RVs FLEETWOOD MOTOR HOME Class C, 2001, 26', Ford V-10, 40,000 miles, $20,000. 704-473- 4698.
