September 26, 2014 • Milwaukee County Post • 15 Post Staff MILWAUKEE — Local leaders partici- pated in the groundbreaking of a new 8,000-square foot addition to the Guest House facilities at 1216 N. 13th St. The agency, a shelter that has provided education and services to the city's home- less population since 1982, has raised nearly $2 million toward a goal of $2.6 mil- lion for the project through the Campaign for Hope and Dignity effort. Funds from the campaign are also earmarked for the renovation of an existing building. "We are thrilled to be celebrating vibrant growth at the Guest House in two exciting ways. First, growing shelter space will allow us to improve program quality and services for over 400 men each year and for all the years ahead," said Cindy Krahenbuhl, executive director of the Guest House of Milwaukee. "And sec- ond, guests growing fresh vegetables for shelter meals will be made more efficient with the new rainwater harvesting pavil- ion." Local leaders included Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, board President Mark Berquist from Assurant Health, campaign chair Paul Eberle of Whyte Hirschboeck and Dudek, Marcy Zilber-Jackson of the Zilber Family Foundation and Cindy Krahenbuhl, executive director of the Guest House. Following the groundbreaking, the agency held its fourth annual Harvest Festival, where Barrett participated in a ribbon-cutting of a new rainwater har- vesting pavilion, the city's first under a new ordinance that allows urban garden structures on residential property. The pavilion was made possible by a grant from the Brewers Community Foundation and a partnership with Reflo Sustainable Water Solutions and Friedens Community Pantry. After the ribbon-cut- ting, graduates of the Cream City Garden's Urban Agriculture Job Training Program were honored and a meal was prepared by chefs from Maxie's Southern Comfort. Vetter Denk Architects and Berghammer Construction are managing the construction project.
