neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS), addiction, overdose, and death." But the FDA stopped short of other requests, saying chronic pain is also a public health crisis in America with societal costs. The law already requires that such pre- scriptions can't be refilled; a new one is required. There are also "strict record-keep- ing and reporting" rules reflecting the "high potential for abuse," says the FDA. In Wisconsin, there is a new database that allows doctors to track whether patients are "doctor shopping." At a public hearing last year, the FDA heard from two groups: those with lost loved ones who wanted the drugs restricted, and those concerned restrictions would block legitimate pain relief, including some promi- nent medical associations. The marketing mattered. Ashley Wazana, a doctor writing in the Journal of the American Medical Association, reviewed 29 scholarly studies, which showed interactions between doctors and pharmaceutical compa- nies started as early as medical school. Most physicians met with reps four times a month. Interactions with pharmaceutical reps made doctors quicker to prescribe drugs. Although professional societies developed guidelines, many doctors were not aware of them. "We need to figure out how to put the genie back in the bottle," Miller says. The question is how, and to what degree. Coming next week: The cartel connec- tion. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention this year is recommending that healthy kids ages 2 to 8 get the nasal flu spray when available. The same age group needs two doses at least four weeks apart if they were not immunized against flu last year. The nasal spray protects against four strains of influenza. "Studies have shown that the nasal flu spray is much more effective than the flu shot for children 2 to 8. It's as much as 50 percent more effective than the shot for this particu- lar age group," said UW Health pediatrician Dr. Caroline Paul. The nasal flu spray is a live attenuated influenza vaccine that has been weakened so that it cannot cause the flu. It is approved for healthy people 2 to 50 years of age. Flu shots are formulated with viruses that have been inactivated, and there are a variety of formu- lations available for everyone over 6 months of age. Everyone over 6 months should receive some form of influenza vaccine. Paul said that the nasal flu spray may not always be available. "If the nasal flu spray is not available, opt for the flu shot instead," said Paul. "You have to build up immunity and that can take up to two weeks." Paul said if children are seeing the doctor for wellness visits or another reason, they should get the flu vaccine at that time. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that children get the vaccine as early as possible and ideally by October. Researcher to study chronic pelvic pain MILWAUKEE — The Medical College of Wisconsin has received a four-year, $1.8 mil- lion grant from the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to study chronic pelvic pain. Jyoti Sengupta, Ph.D., associate profes- sor of gastroenterology and hepatology at MCW, is the primary investigator of the grant. Co-primary investigator on the grant is Banani Banerjee, Ph.D., assistant profes- sor of gastroenterology and hepatology at MCW. More than 1.2 million women and 80,000 men in the United States suffer from painful bladder syndrome, which is a debil- itating and costly disease estimated to be responsible for 4 million patient visits every year, and up to $2 billion in medical costs and associated costs for lost wages and productivity. Many of those patients develop overlapping chronic pelvic pain as well. One of the risk factors for chronic pelvic pain is urinary tract infection early in life. The intense painful stimulus and inflam- mation of the urinary bladder in the neona- tal period may adversely affect neurological development, leading to CPP in adulthood. This project will be the first systematic evaluation that integrates both physiologi- cal and molecular approaches to investigate the underlying mechanism of the neurons involved in neonatal infection-induced chronic bladder pain as well as a pathologi- cal cause for overlapping pelvic pain. By identifying target genes involved in CPP as a result of damage caused by neonatal infections, the researchers will be able to develop specific therapeutic targets and/or biomarkers which will aid in early detec- tion, diagnosis and for developing an effec- tive pain management strategy for CPP. — Post Staff New flu vaccine recomendations for kids RUM 1.75L Mt.
