The Milwaukee Post

September 19, 2014 • Milwaukee County Post • 5 Post Staff MILWAUKEE — In a surprise ceremony at her school, Sarah Franson, a first- through third-grade teacher at Irving Elementary School in the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District, was named Wisconsin's Elementary School Teacher of the Year for the 2014-15 school year. State Superintendent Tony Evers made the announcement during a recent all- school assembly. As part of the teacher of the year honor, Franson will receive $3,000 from the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation. "A Teacher of the Year represents the passion educators across our state have for children and their educational success," Evers said. "They go the extra step to meet student needs, knowing that the education our kids receive in their school years must prepare them for college and careers." Retired U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl is the co- sponsor of the program through his educa- tional foundation. "We need strong teachers in our class- rooms and recognizing excellence through the Teacher of the Year program builds morale and encourages young people to think about teaching as a career," Kohl said. "Educators who are named a Teacher of the Year are leaders in their classroom, school, and communities. They contribute so much to our children and to Wisconsin's future." Franson is described as having an "amaz- ing connection" with her students' families. She attends students' football and soccer games through the recreation department to build relationships with parents and show students her interest in what they do. She has also participated in the Target holiday shopping gift experience to give less fortu- nate students an opportunity to shop with a teacher. Franson volunteers with students to work on the school's community garden throughout the summer, which teaches stu- dents responsibility and a sense of owner- ship. "Next Generation Learning Classrooms allow for students to learn more about themselves, how they learn and how to reach their goals with the support and guid- ance of a team of dedicated teachers," she said in a DPI release. Her future goals include seeking national board certification and certification as an English as a second language teacher. Franson started her teaching career in Milwaukee and has been a first-, second-, and third-grade teacher with Irving Elementary School since 2011. Franson will be recognized during Evers' State of Education address next week in Madison.
