By JULIE MCHALE MILWAUKEE — The Boulevard Theater, founded and sustained for 27 years under Mark Bucher's tutelage, is undergoing a transformation. This tiny theater with its avant garde and classic produc- tions, affording many actors and writers their launching pad into the larger theater arts world, is no longer with us in its traditional form. The building on South Kinnickinnic Avenue in Milwaukee has been sold, and although Bucher intends to become an itin- erant director and continue to produce plays at other venues, it will never be the same. It is hard to sustain a small theater in a city that has many competing theatrical companies, those that are often funded gen- erously by United Performing Arts Fund. But somehow, through sheer grit, talent and determination, the one and only flamboy- ant Bucher made it work for almost three decades. It is hard to see this era come to an end. The very size of the original theater, which only seated 45 people, was so intimate, the offerings so varied and well-executed, and the spirit, humor and dedication of Bucher so compelling that I am happy and grateful that I had the experience of sharing in its contributions to the world of live theater. I will always feel sad when I think back on the original Boulevard Theater, but I can understand Bucher's decision to move on, and I will continue to support his new endeavors as he explores this next phase of his life. Change is inevitable. All we can do is embrace it and create new paths of enjoy- ment. His first production of the 2014-2015 sea- son will be held at the lovely South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center, 901 15th Avenue. "Pal Joey" by Rodgers and Hart features many prominent local actors. Directed by David Flores, it includes Marty McNamee ("Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Coat"), Alexandra Bonesho ("Groucho — A Life Review") and Diane Lane (a frequent participant at Skylight Music Theatre and First Stage). "Pal Joey" runs Sept. 26 through Sept. 28. Call 414-766-5049 or visit the www.south- milwaukee pac.org to secure tickets. Best wishes to Bucher and his many fans.
