12 • Milwaukee County Post • September 19, 2014 MPS gets low grade on DPI report card By DWAYNE BUTLER Post Editor MILWAUKEE — The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction report cards have been filed for the 2013-14 school year, and the results show Milwaukee Public Schools still has work to do. The largest district in the state failed to meet expectations with a sscore of 51.1. Scores for both schools and districts are calculated on a scale of zero to 100. "We have a number of schools that are high achieving or growing in that direc- tion and we want to recognize those schools for their efforts," MPS Acting Superintendent Darienne Driver said. "But too many schools are not yet experi- encing that growth. That's why we are committed to specific, targeted efforts aimed at improving outcomes for students in our lowest-performing schools, as well as broader efforts aimed at improving out- comes across the district." Report cards were filed for 2,113 schools statewide and 424 districts statewide — district report cards are cal- culated for the district as a whole, essen- tially treating the district as a large school. All 42 schools in MPS were given their own scores in student achievement and engagement. The eight schools that exceeded expectations were: Academia de Lenguajey Belles Artes (ALBA School), Fer nwood Montessori School, Honey Creek Continuous Progress Charter School, Maryland Avenue Montessori School, Golda Meir School, Milwaukee French Immersion School, Milwaukee Ger man Immersion School and Walt Whitman School Twenty-two schools met expectations: Academy of Accelerated Learning, Louisa May Alcott School, Luther Burbank School, A.E. Burdick School, Clement Avenue School, James Fennimore Cooper School, Fairview School, Benjamin Franklin School, La Escuela Fratney (Fratney School), Greenfield Bilingual School, Humboldt Park School, Gwen T. Jackson Early Childhood and Elementary School, Rufus King International High School, Lowell Elementary School, Milwaukee College Prep — 38th Street Campus, Milwaukee Parkside School for the Arts, Milwaukee School of Languages, Milwaukee Spanish Immersion School, Ronald Reagan College Preparatory High School, Escuela Vieau (Vieau School), Wedgewood Park Inter national School and John Greenleaf Whittier Elementary School. Twelve schools comprised of new and alter native schools made satisfactory progress: The Achievement Center, ASSA- TA High School, Banner Preparatory School of Milwaukee, Car men High School of Science and Technology — Northwest Campus, Career Youth Development, Grandview High School, Hmong American Peace Academy (HAPA), Milwaukee County Youth Education Center, Milwaukee Environmental Sciences, Milwaukee Excel High School (closed at the end of the 2013-14 school year), Project STAY and Universal Academy for the College Bound. This is the second year for district report cards and the third year for school report cards, according to a DPI press release. Both evaluate schools and dis- tricts in four priority areas: student achievement in reading and mathematics on statewide assessments; student growth in those assessed areas; closing gaps for reading and mathematics achievement and graduation, based on student sub- groups; and postsecondary readiness, which uses several measures as predictors of college and career readiness. Overall, the DPI report cards for Wisconsin schools and school districts show that the majority meet or exceed expectations for the 2013-14 school year, according to the release. "Most of our public schools and school districts are providing a solid education to our children, but we don't want to rest on our laurels," said state Superintendent Tony Evers. "These report cards are a good communication device to focus dis- cussion among parents, schools, and com- munities on how our schools and school districts are doing and how they can con- tinue to improve." The rest of the county school districts had the following results: Brown Deer met expectations with a score of 70, Cudahy met expectations with a score of 63.9, Franklin Public Schools exceeded expec- tation with 78.5, Greendale exceeded expectations with 79.7, Greenfield met expectations with 68.7, Oak Creek- Franklin Joint District exceeded expecta- tions with 73.9, St. Francis met expecta- tions with 68.2, Shorewood exceeded expectations with 81.5, South Milwaukee met expectations with 68.9, Wauwatosa exceeded expectations with 79, West Allis- West Milwaukee met expectations with 69.4, Whitefish Bay significantly exceeded expectations with 84.2 and Whitnall exceeded expectations with 74.1. In all, 159 districts exceed expectations and 247 meet expectations, the release said. Seven districts met few expectations.
