September 5, 2014 • Milwaukee County Post • 7 By ARTHUR THOMAS Conley News Service MILWAUKEE — Republican attorney general candidate Brad Schimel trailed his Democratic opponent, Susan Happ, among likely voters by just over 10 per- centage points in the first Marquette University Law School poll released last week. Schimel's campaign said the results were not surprising. "This is what we expected," said Johnny Koremenos, Schimel's campaign manager, stressing that Schimel, the Waukesha County district attor ney, would be demonstrating why he has the support of law enforcement over the next 2 1/2 months. Happ's campaign said voters are responding to her record. "Wisconsin voters are ready for an attorney general who puts the people's interest ahead of partisan politics, and that's what Susan Happ represents," said Happ spokesman Joshua Lease. Voters also don't seem to have a clear idea of who the candidates are. Happ, the Jefferson County district attorney, leads Schimel 42.5 percent to 32 percent among likely voters, but almost 23 percent are undecided or don't know who they would vote for if the election were held today. In the governor's race between Scott Walker and Mary Burke, just 2.5 percent are undecided. Koremenos said a majority of voters would support Schimel as they begin to compare the two candidates. "Susan Happ is too lenient and too lib- eral," he said. Unlike the gover nor's race, where most voters have already have an opinion about the candidates, Schimel and Happ are still relatively unknown. Just 9.6 percent of likely voters said they have a favorable opinion of Schimel, but only 5.1 percent have an unfavorable opinion. Nearly 85 percent either haven't heard enough to have an opinion or don't know yet. The numbers are similar for Happ, with 12.7 percent having a favorable view, compared with 7 percent unfavorable. For her, just under 80 percent haven't heard enough or don't know. Koremenos credited Happ's Democratic primary win for her edge in the poll. "Susan Happ gets a bump from spend- ing a lot on television, (we spent none) and her fawning post-primary press cov- erage," he said. Happ earned 52 percent of the vote on Aug. 12 to beat out state Rep. Jon Richards of Milwaukee and Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne. Schimel did not have a primary oppo- nent. Both candidates have tried to appeal to voters across party lines. Schimel has been touting the endorsements of Democratic district attorneys and sher- iffs, while Lease said Happ is a "tough prosecutor who works across party lines to get the job done." When it comes to party lines in the lat- est Marquette poll, both candidates have similar levels of support with registered voters. Among Republicans, Schimel was sup- ported by 80.7 percent, while Happ received 6.2 percent in the poll. Thirteen percent were either undecided, wouldn't vote, would vote for someone else or did- n't know who they would choose. Among Democrats, Happ received 85.9 percent, while Schimel received 1.7 per- cent. Democrats choosing a response other than the two candidates total 12.4 percent. Support among independents was largely split. Happ received 28.7 percent. Schimel received 27.5 percent. Just over 43 percent said they were either undecid- ed or didn't know who they would vote for. The poll sampled 815 registered voters, including 609 likely voters, giving it a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 per- cent for registered voters and 4.1 percent for likely voters.
