In their third straight attempt at winning the Division VI Val- ley Championship the Aztecs finally got that elusive victory by defeating the Strathmore Spartans 47-35. Last season was definitely a season of firsts for the Aztecs. Not only did they win their first Valley Title but they also had another first in Anthony Azevedo, who became the school's first 1,000 yard rush- er as he finished the season with 1,034 rushing yards. 2014 PREviEw Farmersville will be starting the season with a new head coach as Gil Gonzales takes the helm for the Aztecs. This is Farmersville's third head coach in four years. Coach Gonzales is head- ing into this season with a very good nucleus returning from last year's champion- ship team. Gonzales feels with the skilled players coming back, the Aztecs will be a very good football team. OffEnSE The offensive scheme will not be changing too much this year for the Aztecs. Coach Gonzales sees the talent that he has return- ing and knows the scheme that has been in place the past few seasons has been working well for this group, so he does not want to try and reinvent the wheel. On the offensive line it will be Omar Gutierrez who will be leading this group, and it will be his job to make sure the o-line protects Sam Metcalf at Quarterback. Coach Gonzales believes the Aztecs will have their second 1,000 yard rusher in school history with Jose Solis to go along with the Aztecs talented receiver, Joseph De La Cruz. DEfEnSE The Aztecs defense will be strong this year. Gonzales feels he has the size in the middle of the d-line and also the fast, hard hitters at the linebacker position to stop the run. The Aztecs secondary is another spot where the Aztecs will be strong. They have a couple of returning starters from last year's squad. This year's defense has a lot to prove, for one thing this year's defense wants to put to rest that Farmersville is not just an offensive team but a team with a defense that allows the offense to win games. PREDiCTiOn The Aztecs will be good, there is no doubt about that. The Aztecs will be tested come preseason but once East Sierra League begins there is no one who will touch the Aztecs. Come playoff time it will be interesting to see how the Aztecs do in Division V. They should at least advance to the quarter-finals but after that it is hard to say.
