Did Realize...ealize... er Famous North Carolinian Thursday, July 21-July 27, 2011 Barbara Loden Film & Stage Actress Barbara Loden Film & Stage Actress She was born in Marion, North Carolina on July 8, 1932. In addition to her fi lm and stage work, she also became a fi lm director. Unfortunately, she passed away at a young age of 48 of breast cancer (September 5 1980). She was very active from the 1950s to 1980. She was married to the famous director, Elia Kazan by whom she had one child. She is best known for her role in the Kazan fi lm, “Splendor in the Grass” (1961). She played a fi ctionalized version of Marilyn Monroe in Kazan’s stage production of “After the Fall” which was written by Monroe’s former husband,playwright Arthur Miller. In 1970 Loden wrote, produced and directed and starred in the independent fi lm, “Wanda”. At the time, it was one of the very few fi lms directed by a woman. The fi lm won the International Critics Prize at the Venice Film Festival in 1970 and was presented at the 1971 Cannes Film Festival.
