A whole-house fan is an effective alternative to air condi- tioning when it comes to cooling a home. Homeowners fre- quently spend hundreds of dollars a month to run an air condi- tioning system. A whole-house fan works by drawing cool, ex- ternal air into the home through open windows while pushing hot air out. Whole-house fans are not the same as attic fans, although most are installed in between the attic and the ceiling of the home. A whole-house fan creates negative pressure in the living area, which helps to draw cooler air in through the windows and into the home. An attic fan simply exhausts hot, attic air. When a whole-house fan is in place, homeowners living in regions with moderate temperatures may be able to skip the use of air conditioning altogether. These fans can be ceiling-mounted or connected to ductwork. The advantages of ceiling-mounted fans are their tendency to be less expensive or invasive. However, ducted systems are quieter and can even be placed inbedrooms. When considering cooling methods for a home, homeowners may want to investigate the advantages of installing a whole-house fan.
