Mexicana Y muchos servicios más "And to those who belie- ve that adventures are dan- gerous, I say, try routine; that kills you far more quic- kly." - Paulo Coelho - TULSA, Oklahoma – When my papa, Armando Roy Chaboya, left this world in 2009, I experienced such a profound loss that is took me a few years to recover. As those who have lost dear ones know, we slowly begin to understand that our lo- ved ones are always with us, speaking to us and through us. We really haven't lost them but life is profoundly different. With these chan- ges, I became more determi- ned to make a difference in the lives of people around me. As my father always said, "Make it a great day, don't have a good day!" His approach to life was active and determined not passive and comfortable. Many of us are afraid to change but in order to have a fulfilling life and make a difference; we must change! So in the midst of this tumultuous time, hope was still alive and the birth of a servi- ce minded non-profit was born. After years of drea- ming of ways to honor my father and also serve the community, the Tulsa In- tercultural Association was founded in 2012 and is now a recognized 501 c3 organi- zation. Our purpose it to: pro- mote intercultural compe- tency, language proficiency, community service, and academic excellence. We offer cultural and language programs plus scholarships. For the last three summers, we have partnered with Tulsa Global Alliance (TGA) and Tecnológico de Monte- rrey (ITESM) to bring high school students to Tulsa from our sister city San Luis Potosi to improve their English and learn more about American culture. ese students live with host families provided by TGA and attend classes/ac- tivities organized by Tulsa Intercultural Association. Another service we provide is the opportunity to create scholarships in honor of family or friends. We can develop, manage and promote new scholars- hips. In 2013, we awarded the first ever Armando Roy Chaboya scholarships to two students from Mexico! We also are raising sup- port to bring Pulitzer prize photographer José Galvez to Tulsa this September to celebrate Hispanic Herita- ge Month which coincides with the Tulsa City/County Hispanic Resource Center's 15th birthday celebration. On the artistic front, we are supporting one of Tomás Baldonado's murals to be painted at the Tulsa Community College Edu- cation Outreach Center. Currently, we are searching for volunteers to assist us in all areas: fundraising, marketing, programming, web/logo design, etc. In addition, we are accepting donations to our scholars- hip funds: the ESL Access Scholarship and the Ar- mando Roy Chaboya Scho- larship. e ESL Access Fund is available for stu- dents who are enrolled in non-credit or credit English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. e goal is to help individuals improve their English skills so they can obtain better employment or pursue a college degree. e Armando Roy Cha- boya Fund seeks to recog- nize individuals who have demonstrated character in the face of adversity and show a strong desire to ser- ve others. Students must be enrolled in at least one course at an educational institution. For both scho- larships, preference is given for verified financial need but we accept all applica- tions regardless of income or documentation. I encourage everyone to find a cause to support and then actively make a difference. We all should consider participating by offering time, talents, mo- ney, and prayer. Of course, any gift to our organization is greatly appreciated and all donations are tax deduc- tible. My final thought is of thankfulness to my parents who raised me to value people, to stand up for the rights of others, and make a positive difference. is is exactly what we are doing through the Tulsa Intercul- tural Association. More information about Tulsa Intercultural Association (918) 361-8857 TulsaTIA@gmail.com DANIEL CHABOYA is the Coordinator of the English as a Second Language program at Tulsa Community College. He is also the founder of the Tulsa Intercultural Association, a non-profit entity. Professor Chaboya serves as one of the members of the Community Advisory Board of El Nacional.
