By DAVE FIDLIN Special to The Post MILWAUKEE — Flanked by hundreds of exuberant supporters, Milwaukee Alderman Bob Donovan on Tuesday officially announced his bid to become the city's next mayor. The seat is up for grabs in 2016. Donovan, who has hinted at running for mayor throughout the past year, formally announced his intention to seek the position currently held by Tom Barrett at a rally at American Serb Hall on the city's south side. For 14 years, Donovan has represented por- tions of the south side as alderman of the city's 8th District. In recent years, his criti- cism toward incumbent Barrett has grown progressively more vocal — particularly when it comes to law enforcement. In jest, Donovan kicked off his announce- ment by remarking Barrett had planned to make it to the rally. "But he's been delayed," Donovan quipped. "He's taking the streetcar." Barrett's strong backing of a trolley sys- tem that would take passengers through a 2.1- mile stretch of the city's downtown area has been controversial and common fodder for Donovan. But Donovan's address quickly took a more serious tone, particularly when it came to crime. He also sharply critiqued Barrett's approach to leading the city, calling it "timidi- ty of leadership" on multiple occasions. "We need to shake things up and get Milwaukee moving right," Donovan said to thunderous applause. "We're going to start taking Milwaukee off autopilot." DID YOU KNOW?
