Some might think this is early, but below are my thoughts on how the South Mountain Athletic and Southern Piedmont Conferences will turn out this season on the gridiron. SMAC 2A/3A 9) Draughn: The Wildcats will have two offensive weapons back for another year, but they lost about everybody else. That's not to say that they can't be competitive. 8) East Burke: This maybe my sleeper. They have legendary Tom Brown coaching them this season and a good set up on offense. If they can improve immensely on defense, they could fi nish fourth or fi fth in the league. 7) East Rutherford: The Cavaliers should be athletic, but they lost a bunch of seniors who contributed to last year's team. If Kameron Garrison can loose enough from the backfi eld, the line play and defense gets better, then who knows what East Rutherford can do? Kicker, Harrison Wilkerson and athletic D.J. Miller are back as well. 6) Kings Mountain: I can't imagine Kings Mountain being worse than a year ago. Brandon Bell will be back at quarterback and a young group of kids who played a year ago now have some varsity experience. 5) Chase: So, they lost a bunch of seniors from a year ago, but they do have some good young talent coming up. The Trojans could mix it up or fi nish near the bottom of the conference depending on how fast they can mature. Tyrell Boykins and D'Andre Kelly are atleast back for another year. 4) R-S Central: Just like a year ago, four through nine in the conference should be chaotic as there are three other team in the conference who standout a little more. However, R-S Central made a jump last year by increasing the overall wins from one win to fi ve in one season. They have Matt Atchley (fullback/safety), Ivan Gutierrez (lineman) and Desmond Whitesides (running back) back among a good cast of kids who put Central in the playoffs and won the county title a year ago. If Cleveland County already believes Central will be a tough team this season, that could bode well for Hilltopper fans. 3) Burns: The Bulldogs do have a new coach that is adapting and vice versa for the kids to him. Still, they have a solid crop of football players who should at least fi nish third in the league. 2) Shelby: They have a ton of talent coming back from the 2A state championship team one year ago. R.J. George and Antwan Wright lead the Golden Lions again this season. 1) Crest: It shouldn't take much to charge the Chargers, who lost the 3AA state title a year ago. Nearly everybody is back and they are loaded everywhere. Athletic Dominique Roseboro comes back from injury and now senior Omar Brooks had 12 sacks a year ago for Crest. Southern Piedmont 6) Pine Lake Prep: I don't see much improvement here. 5) Highland Tech: Read #6 again. 4) Cherryville: They will have all their skill players back, but can they fi nd anybody to block for them. 3) Community School of Davidson: A bit of an SPC mystery and may improve the most from one year ago. 2) Thomas Jefferson: Probably will be the odds- on favorite to win the conference this season. They have 15 returning starters from a year ago in the SPC. Tyler Mitchell, Trey McGhee and Cody Flynn all return and that's a very good thing. And for thought, TJCA has their most important league games at home this season. 1) Bessemer City: Two words…Cedric Mackey. Finally, the Forest City Owls are falling out of the playoff hunt. Right now, they sit four games behind fi rst and three out of second in the West second half Coastal Plain League standings. There are only 13 regular season games left this summer.
