Soap Updates Joshua Morrow and Sharon Case star in "The Young and the Restless" By Jacqui Wiens TV Media Face or fiction: Makeup is ubiquitous in our society. Many women spend their mornings ap- plying accents to their facial fea- tures and smoothing over per- ceived flaws in their skin. When taken beyond daily applications, makeup can transform a person's face or body into an entirely differ- ent being. Syfy has already produced six seasons of the reality competition series "Face Off," and the network is diving back into the world of makeup artistry with season 7 pre- miering Tuesday, July 22. This season's 16 makeup artists will strive to transform their live models into unrecognizable crea- tures. Each challenge will have a set of requirements that must be met, and the contestants will put their creativity to work to create flawless and unique looks. In the first elimination challenge of the season, the artists will have to combine the features of either a beetle, an ostrich or an elephant with their human model to create an imaginary hybrid species. The assignments won't be any less exciting as the season wears on. Among other challenges they will face, competitors will be tasked with creating an alien spe- cies that could live on a fictional planet, designing a scary look for a horror villain, carrying out a wed- ding gender-swap and exploring the application of full body paint. In their quests to create outlandish looks, the contestants will use a variety of techniques and skills, in- cluding the design and production of prosthetic accents. "Face Off" will be overseen, as it has from its inception, by host McKenzie Westmore. Westmore's name may be familiar to some viewers; her great-grandfather set up the first makeup department in Hollywood. Many members of the Westmore family followed their patriarch's example and were heavily involved in the evolution of makeup techniques over the years. Joining Westmore to provide feedback to the contestants will be veteran makeup artist Glenn Het- rick and Academy Award winner Ve Neill, as well as creature design- er Neville Page. This season of "Face Off" con- tains some very imaginative de- signs and artists with the skills to bring them to life. To see how each competitor tackles the challenges and who executes their plan the best, tune in Tuesday, July 22, for the season 7 premiere of "Face Off," on Syfy. Designers at the ready: Sweep off the catwalk, turn on the spotlights and select your model. A new season of Lifetime's "Project Runway" is about to begin. With 12 seasons, three all-star seasons and a spinoff to its name, "Project Runway" has proven it has staying power and popular ap- peal. The design competition will return for a 13th season Thursday, July 24, on Lifetime. "Project Runway" gives aspir- ing designers a chance to show- case their work in front of a televi- sion audience, gaining visibility and buzz. The show also partners with well-known personalities and corporations to create a more real- istic competitive atmosphere. At the end of the contest, the winner receives a cash prize to get their own design line off the ground, as well as various other sponsor prizes. In addition to the cash prize, the winner of season 13 will receive a complete studio to work in, a chance to design an ac- cessory for Red Robin, a Marie Claire spread, a Samsung enter- tainment center and a car from Lexus. Judging the competition are model and designer Heidi Klum and fashion journalist Nina Garcia, who have been with the show since the beginning, and fashion designer Zac Posen, who joined the show in season 11. They are joined by Tim Gunn, host of spinoff show "Under the Gunn," who will mentor the contestants through- out the season. Gunn will also have one chance during the com- petition to save a designer from elimination. This season, fans were invited to vote for a previous contestant to rejoin "Project Runway" for another chance at the grand prize.
