Member of The Associated Press and CNHI News Service EDITOR’S NOTE It’s prom season _ dresses, dinner reserva- tions, tiaras, peppermint schnapps! Like many pre-ladies, I looked forward to this event for years _ buying the prom editions of YM and Seventeen magazines starting in middle school. And then there was the barrage of teen movies focused on prom like “Ameri- can Pie,” “10 Things I Hate About You” and “Never Been Kissed.” Prom was an auspi- cious night when people lost their virginity and/or fell in love. That wasn’t the point for me, though _ I didn’t even start dating until I was in college. But, I did go to three proms. My dates were an older neighbor and two male friends. Nothing romantic. No expecta- tions. For me, it was all about the dress, and the dancing. My favorite was my senior prom dress _ this cherry-red halter ball gown with irides- cent olive green and purple chevron stripes in the fabric. What made the night was a reason to dress up and dance with friends. As an adult, I look forward to wedding receptions with the same zeal. Pretty much the same concept, only now there are bridal parties, open bars and blow-up guitars. There is still dress shopping and rug-cutting to “Love Shack” and “Baby Got Back.” A coworker, Emily Popek, and I were talking about how much fun it would be to have a 2 O-Town Scene June 23, 2011 prom as adults _ just like a wedding recep- tion, but without the bride and groom or wed- ding gifts, and with formal wear if desired. Popek’s column on prom dresses is on Page 5 in this issue. We quickly organized the Adult Prom, which is this Saturday at Foothills Performing Arts and Civic Center. The DJ has been given the instructions of creating a fun, wedding reception atmosphere, complete with specialty lighting. Our goal for the event is that people get a chance to get dressed up in whatever they have in their closets they think they’d never have another occasion for, dance and have a blast. Tickets are only $10, which includes appetizers and the DJ dance party and benefits Foothills. There will also be specialty reduced price “Spiked Punch” cocktails to set the prom mood. This will be my first prom with an actual date _ my Amish-looking, organic-farming boyfriend. And he’s even looking forward to wearing something fancier than overalls. So, come out if you’re looking for something fun and different to do while supporting a com- munity organization at the same time. I hope to see you there! _ Cassandra Miller
