Do you remem- ber what it was like? It really wasn't that long ago. When I headed off for college 21 years ago, iPads hadn't even been invented and cell phones were still the big, bulky bag phones – using an analog signal. Today we can't imagine leaving home without one or the other, especially when taking a trip. Earlier this summer, I va- cationed in downtown Chi- cago (my favorite city!). My cell phone proved very handy in finding unique res- taurants at which to dine, catching the next bus or CTA train, and discovering special events and attrac- tions nearby. Here are my top five mo- bile apps I'd recommend in- stalling on your smartphone or tablet as you enjoy your summer. They can be down- loaded from the Google Play store on Android de- vices or the App Store on Apple devices. Google Maps. Probably one of the best navigation apps available on both An- droid and Apple mobile de- vices, it makes finding your way very easy. Google Maps provides voice-guided GPS direction for driving, biking and walking. It also gives transit information for over 15,000 cities. Grill It! For those who en- joy grilling outdoors during the summer, this app pro- vides detailed recipes for grilling beef, lamb, seafood, poultry and more. You can easily browse the recipes by category and save your favorites for quick access. Impress your friends and family with your mad grill- ing skills! Trip-It Travel Organizer. Available in both free and paid versions, this app takes the headache out of making travel plans. Simply email your hotel, airline, car rent- al and restaurant confirma- tions to plans@tripit.com and the app will automatical- ly create your detailed daily itinerary for you. Roadtrippers. Do you enjoy exploring the roads less trav- eled? Is the having fun on the jour- ney more fun than just get- ting to your destination? The Roadtrip- pers app is for you. Discov- er sites and places you might not nor- mally know about. You can explore over 100,000 places by categories, such as din- ers and drive-ins, offbeat ho- tels, breweries, film and T V locations, scenic points, and more. Great for those who like to jump in the car and just drive. MyCityWay Now. OK, I'm partial to Chicago. Even if you don't like the big city, exploring Chicago can be loads of fun, especially when using the MyCityWay Now app. (Side tip: The best way to get there is via the Am- trak train from Effingham.) The new app gives you de- tailed information for over 30 major cities. Places to go, night- life, shopping, din- ing – you name it, it has it. I hope you en- joy the summer with friends and family. Be sure to take advantage of the useful apps available on your mobile devices to reduce the stress. Be sure to visit us this week at the Gibson County Fair in Princeton.
