West Bend, WI 53090 (262) 334-1906 W63 N127 Washington Ave. Cedarburg, WI 53012 (262) 377-1906 There are two certainties in life, according to Ben Franklin; to paraphrase, "growing old and taxes." The taxes come around and are dealt with every April 15th but the growing old is something that sneaks up and is here before we real- ize it. As we age, our abili- ties change, our needs change, and our lives have to change to be able to live each day to the fullest and enjoy the time we're living. For most it means moving from our familiar sur- roundings, whether it's the home we've spent the last several decades, or the smaller place we've down- sized to, and into a retire- ment space where we get the assistance to make life easier. Washington County is lucky to have several retirement facilities that serve all levels of need. One of the newest, Lighthouse of West Bend, takes a holis- tic approach, where the focus is the care of the entire resident in all aspects of well-being, including physical, psycho- logical, spiritual, and social. When I first walked into Lighthouse of West Bend, located at 2130 Continental Drive just south of Paradise, I felt like I was walking into a fine hotel. The beautiful lobby is deco- rated in multi-textures of stone and marble and I was greeted by the concierge ready to help guide me to where I wanted to go. I was there to see Bonnie Nissly, the Community Relations Director, and Michael Nagovan, the Director of Dining Services. Bonnie, Michael and I sat down and I found out what makes Lighthouse of West Bend such a unique approach to helping seniors Live Life on Purpose. The Lighthouse family of community facilities, start- ed by Todd and Sherry Novaczyk in 1998 in Minnesota, has 12 sites around the Midwest. The family owned company, New Perspective Senior Living (NPSL), was started from the personal experi- ence the family had with caring for Betty, who was afflicted with Alzheimer's disease. The question that they would focus on is "What would be best for Betty?" It is this attention to the person that anchors the mission of the Lighthouse staff to put the resident first in everything that they do. They approach the whole person with the Four Pillars of Lighthouse Living: Physical Fitness, Brain Fitness, the Dining Experience, and Social and Spiritual Enrichment. All of these pillars are impor- tant to the whole person and Lighthouse sees tha t each resident experiences the correct balance for them to live life to the fullest. Lighthouse has 3 levels of living, depending on the needs of the resident. Apartment living is for the people who can live on their own and take care of normal day to day living. They live independently in a one or two bedroom apartment and enjoy the restaurant dining rooms as well as housekeeping to help with the menial week- ly cleaning. The second level is for the residents Continued on page 12 In Good Taste Living Life on Purpose ® Written By: John Sancomb One of the many areas.
