Aging in Place Beautifully
"A
ging in place" means re-
maining in one's home safely,
independently and comfort-
ably, regardless of age, income or ability
level. It means the pleasure of living in a
familiar environment throughout one's
maturing years and the ability to enjoy
the familiar daily rituals and the special
events that enrich all our lives. It means
the reassurance of being able to call a
house a "home for a lifetime", according
to the National Association of Home
Builders.
Adaptive Remodeling is another term
for creating an environment that ad-
dresses the mobility needs of older peo-
ple, those recuperating from an accident
or surgery, or individuals dealing with a
chronic or progressive illness where their
home's current layout creates challenges.
Universal Design makes things safer,
easier and more convenient for every-
one. It involves designing products and
spaces so that they can be used by the
widest range of people possible. Uni-
versal Design evolved from Accessible
Design, a design process that addresses
the needs of people with disabilities.
