A5 A5 June 12, 2014 O-Town Scene 5 Artist of the Month: Marie DiLorenzo & Matty Brown The oil paintings of Marie DiLorenzo and Matty Brown are on display at the Cooper- stown Art Association through July 3. According to a media release, the two- person exhibition in Gallery A demon- strates the artists' "achievement in study- ing, experimenting, and delving through paint into the subject matter of the human face." DiLorenzo lives and works in Cooper- stown as assistant director at the Cooper- stown Art Association Galleries, as well as a freelance artist in her spare time. After graduating from Cooperstown Central School, she went on to receive her Bach- elor of Fine Arts degree in painting from the State University College at Potsdam, with concentrations in drawing and mixed media and art history. From the release: "She has studied and mostly identified with the Impressionists and Neo-Expressionists, which can be seen through her use of predominantly bold, often very saturated colors. She has a need to create the improbable, the thought-provoking, and the questionable. Erratic marks and jagged lines are char- acteristic in her work, in which she strives to evoke the personality or character of her subject matter. Regardless of what she paints, her goal is to show a different side to reality; to make individuals stop and look at something ordinary in a completely different--and beautiful way. For that rea- son she makes art. She does it so people open their eyes to something they might normally reject." Brown is a large-scale portrait painter in Cooperstown who discovered as a high school senior that "painting was a open door to release his self expression," the release said. At this point, Brown turned from his previous work in drawing and sculpture to work with paint. Brown at- tended both Pratt Munson Williams Proctor Art Institute and Alfred University. After college, Brown apprenticed at a local tattoo shop, but left after a few months. From the release: "Matty Brown strives to portray a whimsical glance into the subject's world. He believes art is an experience and everyone will see different things based on their personal experi- ences. As it is said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder." This exhibition marks the debut pre- sentation of both artists' work in a public setting. About the Artists Needed. Wanted. With Find&Save it's all on sale.
