Even XXXXX, XXXXX XX, 2013 | TAB NAME Odd 2 TV ENCORE By Jacqueline Spendlove TV Media C W may be disappointing some viewers with its list of show cancelations, but one beastly series managed to nar- rowly avoid the ax. Despite common predictions that "Beauty and the Beast" wouldn't survive past its second season, the network announced on May 8 that a renewal is, in fact, in the cards. While the show doesn't always rake in huge numbers — the season 2 pre- miere drew less than a million viewers — its fans are die-hard, and it obviously gets enough love to be renewed for another season. The romantic drama returns to CW after a three- month hiatus Monday, June 2, for season 2's final six episodes. Fans are breathing sighs of relief, and the decision to renew "Beauty and the Beast" has come as a surprise to many. The show actually ranks below other struggling shows on the net- work's prime-time roster that didn't make the cut for next sea- son. "Star-Crossed" and "The Tomorrow People" have been axed after just one season, and "The Carrie Diaries," initially anticipated with such excite- ment, didn't live past its second. Following "Beauty and the Beast's" last-aired episode back Graybeals Carpet 2 x 3" Young's Culligan 3 x 3" Harrison- Merzger 2 x 2" On the Cover in March, "TV by the Numbers'" Cancellation Bear declared the series "certain to be canceled," with writer Bill Gorman confi- dent that not even a great hue and cry from fans of the show could bring "Beauty and the Beast" back for a third season. Three months later, Gorman calls the renewal — and the Cancellation Bear's only incor- rect prediction for CW — "among the most mind boggling of all the Cancellation Bear's misses ever." To give credit where credit is due, however, the show main- tains a loyal, if not enormous following. Not to mention it's brought home three People's Choice Awards, one of which was for "Favourite Sci-Fi/ Fantasy TV Show," so it must be doing something right. The show is loosely based on the late-'80s CBS series of the same name starring Linda Hamilton ("The Terminator," 1984) and Ron Perlman ("Hellboy," 2004) in the leading roles of Catherine Chandler and Vincent Keller, respectively. Interestingly, the series was writ- ten and produced by George R.R. Martin, the man behind HBO's immensely popular fantasy drama "Game of Thrones." Unfortunately for "Beauty and the Beast," it didn't enjoy the same acclaim and lasted only three seasons. One immediately notable area in which the CW series veered from its predecessor is the fact that, while Perlman's Vincent is quite beastly indeed in appear- ance (he looks like a humanoid lion), CW's titular beast, played by New Zealand hunk Jay Ryan ("Neighbours"), looks pretty darn dreamy most of the time. As Tim Goodman quipped in "The Hollywood Reporter" back in the show's freshman season, "'Beauty and the Beast' ... is more like 'Beauty and Beauty With a Slight Scar.'" Aside from glowing eyes and a sharp- toothed snarl, there's not a lot of outward monstrosity about this Vincent, his being more of a beastliness of nature. There's no doubt, looking at "Hart of Dixie," "Reign," "The Vampire Diaries" and the rest of CW's lineup, that the network knows how to dish out a fine- looking cast. No complaints here, though. This just makes "Beauty and the Beast" that much more enjoyable. The show examines the unique relationship between no- nonsense (and, of course, gor- geous) detective Catherine "Cat" Chandler (Kristin Kreuk, "Smallville") and the aforemen- tioned Vincent Keller, a former doctor who became involved in The Beast is back: 'Beauty and the Beast' returns to wrap up its second season a super-soldier experiment while serving in Afghanistan. A muta- tion in his DNA now causes him to transform and lose control over himself when distressed, a la Incredible Hulk. Though he still appears more or less human when he transforms, his mind regresses to a more animal state. Ten years prior, Vincent saved Cat from the hired killers who murdered her mother and is now being hunted by the same orga- nization that sent the assassins. The two are drawn to one another despite the difficulty of Vincent's situation, and a romance blossoms early in the series. Season 2 has thrown more of a wrench into their relationship, with Vincent returning after an abduction with his memory wiped clean and a mysterious mission to carry out. When we left off in March, the two had just blessedly reconnected when Vincent was arrested for murder. Now, Cat, unable to bear the thought of losing him again, must come up with a plan to get Vincent out of prison.
