As the crowd gathered and continued to grow, the positive feeling of an impending success also grew. The founder of the movement, Angela Sanford started things off with a talk of how good things can happen in Rutherford County for the benefit of all its' citizens. She told of her own story and repeated her often heard theme: "We are not going to quit". The registered runners for the event totaled 310. There were runners and walkers of all ages which did not include the kids Fun Run. The crowd was not only enthusiastic but determined to make this first event a success and assure its' continuance every year. Those participating were a definite cross section of all in Rutherford County. The winner of the 5K was everyone! The first runner to come across the finish line was Almon Cox from Union Mills, with a winning time of 17.38. Mr. Cox, a recovered meth user, stated "running is my new addiction". He has been clean for three years and does everything and anything to assist others. He turned out to be not only the first place winner but the perfect individual to be a shinning example for the "run against addiction". He is to be congratulated for his participation and commitment to such a great cause. The Run Against Addiction was held at the Epicenter Church, 131 Countryside Drive in Forest City. Pastors, Dr. Joseph and Lynette Dutton were very hands on in helping make this worthy 5K run a resounding success. Everyone was welcomed and cheered as they participated and crossed the finish line. It was not a normal 5K run. It was a 5K achievement and belief for those who were committed to make a better life for those once fallen and now rising up, knowing the possibility of a better life. Phelps is an American Christian vocalist, songwriter and vocal arranger, best known as the tenor in the Gaither Vocal Band. He has also released several solo albums, including four Christmas collections. A graduate from Baylor University, David Phelps is credited among today's most spectacular voices. His seemingly endless vocal range extends more than three octaves and couples with his gift for communicating a song. He has brought the house down in the world's most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall and The White House. He is a multiple platinum artist, two-time Grammy Award Winner and four-time Dove Award winner. Phelps is part of the current Gaither Vocal Band, sharing the tenor part with Wes Hampton. His 2012 live concert DVD, David Phelps: Classic, has received acclaim from across gospel music and beyond and has been featured on numerous television networks, including PBS. This newer work shares an additional aspect of his talent and exposes his audiences to classical titles such as "Nessum Dorma", "Bring Him Home" and "You'll Never Walk Alone". His desire as an artist is to open the door for people who don't know or who have discarded classical music. Both his gospel and classic albums will be featured at the concert. Jill Miracle, Executive Director of Rutherford Regional Health Foundation explains, "We have worked with this phenomenal artist for a very long time, trying to develop the right set of circumstances to bring him to our county. Thanks to Lord Willing Promotions, we were able to form a wonderful partnership to make this concert a reality for Foundation donors and guests from all over the region."
