A Retro Word From Our Sponsors For A Retro Word From Our Sponsors, Oneonta Historian Mark Simonson finds old advertisments in archived issues of the Oneonta Star, and tells their stories. Dec. 12, 1932. Boxing was popular at the Recreation Building, what is today’s Green Earth store, 4 Market St. It opened in 1928 and many later remember it as LaMonica’s Bowling Center until it closed in 1978. The last bout on the ticket featured Carl Delberta, who under the name of Carl Dell went on to have an incredible career as a welterweight boxer. Delberta soon after was a recruit at the Civilian Conservation Corps camp at Gilbert Lake. After World War II, Delberta became an Oneonta police officer. In 1947 he founded what is today’s Oneonta Boys and Girls Club in the yard of his Sixth Ward home, eventually leading to the modern facilities on River Street, which opened in 1968. _ Mark Simonson May 19, 2011 O-Town Scene 19
