The Forest City Owls have added fi ve pitchers and three fi elders and are nearing the completion of their roster for the 2014 season. Nick Nietzel, a starting right-handed pitcher from Davidson currently has a 3.29 ERA through 52 innings with 47 strikeouts. The junior has started eleven games and has a 7-0 record. This is Nietzel's fi rst full season starting for Davidson after coming out of the bullpen the past two years where he threw 31.2 innings and struck out 30. Another low ERA right-handed starter comes to us from Georgetown. Matthew Smith has a 3.21 ERA and a 5-5 record through 13 starts this season. In his 84 innings pitched, the sophomore has struck out 55 and has a .242 batting average against. "It is exciting to have two starters the quality of Nietzel and Smith for our rotation," commented Owls General Manager Cory Dirksen. "Matthew has been recognized as one of the top performers in the Big East on three separate weeks, while Nick has been a rock for the rotation of a team that set the school record for wins." Out of Savannah State, junior right-handers Ryan Doyle and Zachary McCormack join the Owls. Doyle appeared in ten games, starting fi ve and currently has a 6.56 ERA through 23.1 innings of work. The second Savannah State product, Zachary McCormack has a 2-2 record through eleven starts with a 6.34 ERA and 24 strikeouts. The fi fth pitcher added to the Owls is redshirt sophomore Brock Goodling. Goodling comes to the Owls from Winthrop where he has thrown 26.1 innings in 14 relief appearances this season with a 4.10 ERA. Rounding out the roster is three position players, Devin Wenzel a sophomore out of Cincinnati, Bradley Jones a freshman at College of Charleston and redshirt-sophomore Kyle Prats. Devin Wenzel-A sophomore infi elder from Cincinnati, is hitting .252 with four home runs and 26 RBIs. Wenzel started 56 of 58 games as a true freshman last year maintaining a .268 batting average and ranked second in the team in RBI's with 36. "Devin is the guy that if you ask him to play anywhere in the infi eld, he will play it," commented Field Manager Andrew Ciencin. "Offensively we hope that he will be a big RBI guy with gap power." Bradley Jones- Another utility player, Jones is a freshman at College of Charleston and is hitting .204 with 8 RBI's through 98 at-bats. Prior to attending C of C, Jones was ranked the second-best 3B in South Carolina by Diamond Prospects and hit .409 with seven homeruns. "Bradley was a big time prospect coming out of high school," commented Dirksen. "Now that he is getting up to speed with college ball, we are expecting him to explode this summer." Kyle Prats- An outfi elder from Campbell who is batting .250 through 32 at-bats is at his third different school in three years. He redshirted at Virginia Tech his freshman year and then transferred to Miami-Dade where he fi nished with a .377 batting average and had 20 stolen bases. "Kyle is a good little player that will work hard day in and day out," commented Ciencin. "He will bring a lot of energy to the ball club and be a big help defensively in the outfi eld." The Owls will begin the 2014 season at home on May 27th as they take on Columbia.
