The left-handed Orlando Razo comes to the Owls from UC- Davis where he has thrown 32 innings in 18 relief appearances this season and leads the team with a 1.41 ERA. When asked about Razo, Field Manager Andrew Ciencin commented, "I am excited to have Orlando on our staff. He is a quality lefty pitcher that will be a big help to our pitching staff." Another low ERA arm comes to us from Arkansas State, 5'10" right- handed pitcher Tyler Zuber. Zuber has thrown 32 innings in 18 relief appearances with a 2.23 ERA and currently has 27 strikeouts. "Tyler is a low 90s guy with a plus slider that will mostly work out of the bullpen, stated Ciencin. "He will keep the ball down and pound the strike zone. " In addition to Razo and Zuber, the Owls added right-handers Eric Birkland from USC- Upstate and Matthew Deegan from the College of Charleston. Birkland has started 11 games this year (Tied for 2nd on team) with 6 relief appearances pitching 49 2/3 innings. Deegan is red- shirting this season for the College of Charleston but had a high school career record of 19-9 while maintaining a 1.78 ERA and was named the County Player of the Year twice while at Ponte Vedra high school in Florida. "Birkland and Deegan will be good arms for us this season," Dirksen commented. "Birkland, as most Freshman, it takes a little while to adjust to the competition. Now that he knows what they need to do to compete, their natural talents can show." "Deegan was a great pitcher in a baseball rich area during high school," Dirksen stated. "He was pitcher of the year twice and should be a key member of their pitching squad before it is all said and done." The Owls will begin the 2014 season at home on May 27th as they take on Columbia. Fans can purchase season tickets, ½ season plans and 5-game Fireworks plans by calling the Owls offi ce at 828-245-0000. Key dates for the 2014 season include: Fireworks Games on Friday May 30th, Saturday July 5th and Saturday August 2nd, as well as, taking on the Chinese Taipei National team on July 7th.
