Laura's Smile Mile is a 5k run/ 2 mile walk to raise awareness for ovarian cancer. This year's race will be emceed by Portia Young, former WISN morning news anchor/current Public Relations Manager for Sargento. Event breakdown: 8:00 am Check-In & registration begins at Veterans Park 10:30 am Race begins 11:00 am Giggle Gallop for kids ages 2-8 years old 12:00 pm Butterfly Release Ongoing: Kids activities (bouncy house, cupcake decorating) Last year more than 900 people participated in the run/walk. Laura's Smile Mile was created and is dedicated to Laura David, who was diagnosed at age 23 with ovarian cancer. Laura battled this silent cancer with a constant smile on her face. Sadly she passed away on July 3rd of 2011. Close to 16,000 women will die from ovarian cancer this year in the United States and another 6,000 will be diagnosed. Laura's Smile Foundation has donated over $15,000 to the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) to be used for ovarian cancer research. Dr. Janet Rader, Jack A. and Elaine D. Klieger Professor and Chair of obstetrics and gynecology at MCW, and an international leader in gynecological cancer research, "We are extremely grateful for the support of Laura's Smile Foundation," said Dr. Rader. "This funding is key in discovering the causes and new therapies to combat ovarian cancer." Here are the symptoms to be aware of: • Swelling of the stomach, sudden weight gain, or bloating. • Persistent pelvic or abdominal pain or pressure. • Trouble eating or feeling full quickly. • Feeling the need to urinate urgently or often. Laura's Smile Foundation, officially created in 2010 as a 501(c)(3) charity by Laura's sister-in-law Denielle Beilfuss and her friends Michele Buchicchio and Cassie Simpson, is dedicated to leading the movement towards ovarian cancer awareness.
