RUTHERFORD ROUNDTABLE CONGRATULATES CINDY ADAIR The Rutherford Roundtable extends congratulations to Cindy Adair of Rutherfordton who graduated from the North Carolina Rural Eco- nomic Development Institute at the North Carolina Rural Center for Economic Development. She now joins more than 800 other North Carolinians who since 1989 have participated in the Institute and have become a part of a larger alumni network of leaders. As a REDI graduated she will have the opportunity to participate in advanced training and continuing education. The Rural Economic Development Institute is one of several efforts the NC Rural Center efforts undertakes to ensure that rural communities are equipped with skilled, committed and informed leaders. The program is com- mitted to building a base of strong, capable leaders to help improve the economy and quality of life of rural North Carolina in that, the fu- ture of rural North Carolina resides in the hands of leaders who can bring about positive change, especially during the most challenging economic times. While other Rutherford citizens Celia Davenport, Ronnie Connor, Curney Parker, Amy Shehan, Stanley McEntire have participated in the Institute since 1989. The Roundtable seeks to encourage other interested citizens to consider the Institute for the 2012 session. Cindy learned about the Institute in a special program presented to Rutherford Roundtable by Melody Adams of the NC Rural Cen- ter who provided an overview of various programs, grants, and other opportunities of the Center. She too encouraged Roundtable participants to consider the Leadership Development Institute. Cin- dy decided that this was a great opportunity both for her as a small business owner of Bela Mia Designs and as the part-time events coordinator for Rutherford Town Revitalization. She long has been an advocate for her town and her county and has spent countless hours in volunteering with RTR, the Rutherford Chamber and other organizations. Once Cindy made the decision to make application for the Insti- tute, she too submitted a request for a scholarship and in a highly competitive selection process was chosen both as a participant and as a scholarship recipient. Even with her busy schedule, she attended in nine days of classes, three days at a time, over three months. The classes were scheduled at the North Carolina Rural Center Training Center in Raleigh. In between classes, she had homework assignments and was given the opportunity to put their skills into action back in their communities. “The Town of Rutherfordton and Rutherford County is extremely fortunate to have Cindy Adair, not only a resident of the community but one who has demonstrated her commitment to positive change in our county and community. I am sure she will continue this ef- fort to work to create positive change numerous ways as a REDI graduate, “ says Frankie McWhorter, Roundtable coordinator.
