MILWAUKEE – Asked about the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight
he took with other military veterans last week, Ross Johnson Sr.
found himself at a temporary loss for words.
"Oh, I can't even describe it," Johnson said.
But the 85-year-old World War II vet, a native of Milwaukee who
resides on the northwest side, recovered to comment on his favorite
aspect of the trip to and from Washington, D.C.
"I think the best part was when we came home," he said – when
the group of 200-plus got off the plane at Gen. Mitchell
International Airport on Saturday night. What seemed like "a full
city block" of uniformed personnel stood as an honor guard for
Johnson and some 100 fellow veterans to pass through. Besides mil-
itary folks saluting, a band and bagpipers played. The Knights
