Member of The Associated Press and CNHI News Service Editor’s Note OH-Fest, the annual community carnival and concert organized by students at SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick College, was again a success. On Saturday, families strolled down Main Street in Oneonta, stopping to bounce on in- flatable objects, collect balloons and toys and eat funnel cake and cotton candy. College students brought out beer pong tables to front lawns, and later stumbled to Neahwa Park to watch Pitbull with throngs of their peers. Some families attended the late-night hip-hop show, and were upset that college students were rowdy, and even drunk. Col- lege students being rowdy and drunk ... at a hip-hop concert? Shocker. My friends and I are in our 20s, and we steered clear of the concert in the park be- cause we knew it would be a raucous crowd of the stumbling, yelling students we passed on the sidewalks. It wasn’t a place for us, and it wasn’t a place for babies and children. If parents are going to bring their children to a college-sponsored late-night concert, they should know what they’re getting into. I don’t blame the college kids for crowd-surfing or swearing or slurring in a massive mosh pit of their peers. 2 O-Town Scene May 5, 2011 We’re lucky in Oneonta to not have an extended season of college kids day drink- ing and being loud. There just aren’t enough warm days in the time that college is in session to be that upset about it. The colleges’ school years end in a couple of weeks, when many students will disperse for the summer. Then in September, they only have a couple of weeks before it’s too frosty in upstate New York to take the party to the lawn. We live in a college town, and, really, col- lege students are not that disruptive here. However, there was some stupidity Saturday that was annoying and inconsiderate. For example, one lovely college-aged waitress at a pizzeria was brought to tears when a table of drunk college kids shorted her $40, which she had to pay for. All of the slurry yelling throughout Center City could’ve been minimized, too. But, for the most part, OH-Fest is a really nice event that brings a lot of different people together for a fun day. Kudos to the college students who organized it. We’ve got photos from the event on Pages 16 and 17.
