This month salutes the irreplaceable value that foster parents, child welfare professionals, and volunteers have for the more than 400,000 children and youth who live in the foster care system annually. Today there are over 8,400 children in foster care in North Carolina. These children are forced to leave their homes due crisis situations, and they look to loving adults in our communities for the things that they lack from their own families. Foster families give these children a chance to prosper emotionally, physically, mentally, and socially. Without foster parents, a large portion of our population would enter society alone without knowing the love and security of a family. However, these champions often go unnoticed. National Foster Care Month provides the occasion to raise awareness of foster care and to present opportunities for citizens in our communities to be informed, provide support, and perhaps consider becoming a foster parent. Children's Home Society of North Carolina understands that the process of becoming a foster parent can seem intimidating, so we have provided detailed information on our website. By visiting www.chsnc.org, potential foster parents are presented with helpful information on foster care and adoption by selecting the "Programs and Services" tab at the top of the home page. From here, basic steps to becoming a foster parent are clearly explained. Those interested are invited to attend a FREE information meeting in their area. These meetings are offered throughout the state and additional information on the meetings is available on our website under the "Get Involved" tab, and then select "Events." Because our mission is founded on ensuring a permanent, safe, and loving family for every child, those considering providing foster care can rest assured that Children's Home Society is prepared to walk alongside foster families every step of the way. In 1988, then-Senator Strom Thurmond introduced May as National Foster Care Month in order to draw attention to and promote the phenomenon that was occurring in our nation. Catching the vision, President George H.W. Bush declared May as the National Foster Care Month and issued an annual proclamation in each year of his presidency to recognize the working hands that had begun to create the beautiful, united tapestry of foster care in America.
