East Rutherford (17-2, 12-1) softball continued to impress despite capturing the No.1 SMAC seed for the playoffs. Last week, Savannah Davis was untouchable as she threw a no-hitter against Draughn. Davis also led from the plate (3-for-4) and Emilie Dotson added a 2-for-3 day. East Rutherford will face East Lincoln, Bandys or Bunker Hill in the fi rst round of the playoffs. The Lady Cavs travel to Chase for a rivalry game this Friday (5/9). Meanwhile, there is a four way battle for the remaining three playoff spots in 2A. Chase and R-S Central just need one win each and they are likely in the postseason. If East Burke loses both games this coming week, both teams are in as well. East Rutherford baseball lost the SMAC No.1 seed momentarily, only to get it back by the end of the week. The Cavaliers lost to Draughn at home last Thursday, but took care of Crest on Friday night. Since Draughn lost to Burns last Friday, East Rutherford recaptured the No.1 seed with two games remaining. East Rutherford pitcher Cameron Hodge tossed was im- pressive by tossing a one-hitter last week, but earned a no decision against Draughn. If Chase baseball can win once this week, it looks like fi rst year Trojan Head Coach Tony Wall will take his alma mater into the playoffs as a four seed. R-S Central needs help from Chase, but if the Hilltop- pers lose both games, then they are out. If both tie among conference records, then R-S Central would win the tiebreaker since the Hilltoppers won both head-to-head meetings. Chase or R-S Central will likely play at Bunker Hill in the fi rst round of the playoffs depending on who grabs the fourth seed. Thomas Jefferson's chance of making the softball playoffs are very possible. At the moment, the Lady Gryphons (6-8) look as though they could fi nd a wildcard spot and post the best season they have had in school history. On the baseball fi eld, the Gryphons playoffs chances are slim right now, but they still might make it as a wild- card. On the race track, Forest City's own Means Motorsports had their best outing of the season so far with an 11th place fi n- ish at Talladega this past Saturday. Team owner and former driver Jimmy Means took his full-time Nationwide Series effort into Talladega and young driver, Joey Gase piloted the No.52 Donate Life Chevy. Gase, who has driven the Means Motorsports car all season long avoided two crashes and stayed among the top 20 for most of the event. In one of those crashes, Gase ac- tually had to squeeze through the middle of two cars and drop below the banking all while fi shtailing to avoid disaster. At the end, Gase was in the top ten, but fi nished about a foot behind Trevor Bayne for tenth at the fi nish line. He even led a lap on the afternoon. It's pretty smart and I have had my moments where I have been pretty dumb. Regardless, it's still alive and has now become my number one priority until the season ends. I can take you to the area that it will roost in. I know it well. I actually think I missed this bird on opening day which makes it that much more wary of anything it cannot see. But since then, I have set up my son for an op- portunity, but we set up too close. I have set up another young man, trying to get him a shot, but the bird fl ew down and went the other way. And I have also had other opportunities as well and have come up short. My latest try was my most calculated. I purposely got there very early, called very little, and waited on what I thought was ample time. I could hear it gobble and thought if I moved down the hill a little bit, my chances would be better. Wrong. It actually stopped gobbling only to show up behind me. A few minutes later it walked right in front of the area I had previ- ously left. My impatience was once again my undoing. As I think about this bird and the times of my encounters, it would be easy to say this tom is a wise old bird, and it may be. But in reality I have made it look wiser than it is. It should have met its demise many times but I have unwittingly spared its life by giving in to one of the hardest temptations that we all fi ght – the temptation to think we've waited long enough. There is no doubt that more bad decisions have been made by falling to this lie than any other. We think we have waited long enough in our career, in our marriage, in our fi nances, and in many other areas that bring us pain. And as a result of this self-imposed deadline, we have missed perhaps the miracle that God has for us. If there was one truth that I could tattoo on each of our minds it would be this: "Waiting is God's tool for bringing about great things in our life." And waiting until it is "too late" is exactly the place He wants us to get. If it is too late for anything humanly possible, only God will get the glory when something great happens. Are you in a place right now where you have come to your end? Have you drawn a line in the sand and declared that line to be the deadline. Has some situation imposed on you caused you to proclaim the end is near? Then sit still and whatever you do, don't move. That quietness that you sense is not God's inactivity. It is His deliber- ate movement in your life to know He is at work doing what only He can do.
