Abbott, Morton lead Lady Chargers past Southridge by ed cahill Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net A two-run triple by sophomore shortstop Alyx Abbott highlighted a four-run fifth inning as the Pike Central High School softball team rallied for a 7-2 win over visiting South- ridge on Thursday, May 1. Southridge took an early 1-0 lead when catcher Kendyl McKeough scored on a double by first baseman Kassidy Mundy with two outs in the first inning. The 10th-ranked Lady Chargers tied the score at 1-1 in the third inning, when junior centerfielder Kimberly Mc- Cammon scored on a two-out single by Abbott. Two innings later, following back-to-back singles by soph- omore first baseman Presley Bryant and McCammon, se- nior catcher Lauren Morton singled to centerfield, plating Bryant to give the Lady Chargers a 2-1 lead as McCammon advanced to third. After freshman Jolene Whitehead, serving as a courte- sy runner for Morton, stole second base, Abbott tripled to right field to extend Pike Central's lead to 4-1. One out later, Abbott came home on a single by senior pitcher Stephanie Richardson to cap off the four-run inning. The Lady Chargers added two more runs in the sixth in- ning when a double by Morton scored Bryant and McCam- mon, stretching Pike Central's lead to 7-1. The Lady Raiders rallied with two outs in the seventh inning when shortstop Robin Hanebutt was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a single by centerfielder Taylor Up- pencamp and scored on an error. However, with runners on second and third, Richardson got Southridge pitcher Megan Stapleton to pop-up to sopho- more third baseman Samantha Halbrader to end the game. Bryant collected a game-high four hits, including a dou- ble, in four at-bats and scored two runs. McCammon went 2-for-4 and scored three runs. Abbott had two hits, includ- ing a triple, in three at-bats and drove in three runs. Mor- ton went 2-for-4 with a double and also drove in three runs. Richardson went the distance for Pike Central, allow- ing two runs, one of which was earned on four hits, while striking out eight. She also hit three batters with pitches. Submitted Photo Halbrader, Whitehead toss two-hitter in win at Washington Sophomore Samantha Halbrader and freshman Jolene Whitehead com- bined on a two-hitter as the Pike Cen- tral High School softball team defeated host Washington 10 -0 in five innings on Wednesday, April 30. Halbrader pitched the first three in- nings for the win, allowing one hit, a single by Lady Hatcher pitcher Ashley Elliott with one out in the first inning, while striking out three. Whitehead hurled the final two in- nings, surrendering one hit, a single by first baseman Charity Graber with one out in the fifth inning, while strik- ing out one. Whitehead also hit one batter with a pitch. Senior second baseman Stephanie Richardson went 2-for-2 and drove in a pair of runs. Sophomore shortstop Alyx Abbott also had two hits in four at-bats and scored twice. Sophomore first baseman Presley Bryant, junior left fielder Emma Crow, Halbrader and senior third baseman Lauren Morton had one hit each as the Lady Chargers improved to 8 -3. Lady Chargers drop 1-0 loss to Vincennes Lincoln by ed cahill Press-Dispatch Sports sports@pressdispatch.net A single by freshman third baseman Ka- cy Cramer with one out in the fourth inning plated the game's only run as Vincennes Lin- coln edged host Pike Central 1-0 in a high school softball game on Saturday, May 3. Cramer's hit drove in sophomore pitcher Jade Montgomery, who had drawn a four- pitch walk from Lady Charger senior Steph- anie Richardson to start the inning. "I knew it was going to be a dogfight be- cause of the scores I've been seeing them putting on the board," said Pike Central head coach Rick Weisman, whose team was shut out for the first time this season while falling to 9 -4. "They don't allow much." However, the 10th-ranked Lady Chargers had their chances, out-hitting the Lady Al- ices 5 -4 and leaving six runners on the base- paths including two in scoring position. Pike Central's first batter, junior center- fielder Kimberly McCammon, was hit by a pitch leading off the home half of the first inning. However, when McCammon attempted to steal second base on the first pitch to the next hitter, sophomore shortstop Alyx Ab- bott, Vincennes Lincoln sophomore catch- er Taylor Pinkstaff easily threw her out. "I was just trying to see what they've got," Weisman said. "I don't think she quite got a good jump. I thought it'd be closer than that but they had her by probably five or six feet." A fter Montgomery whiffed Abbott for the second out of the inning, sophomore first baseman Presley Bryant singled up the middle, but was left on first base when the next batter, senior catcher Lauren Mor- ton, struck out. In the second inning, sophomore third baseman Samantha Halbrader, after falling behind in the count no balls and two strikes, battled back to draw a leadoff walk. How- ever, the next two batters, Richardson and freshman second baseman Madison Scott, hit into forceouts at second before junior Ol- ivia Whann grounded out to end the inning. In the top of the fourth inning, Montgom- ery drew a leadoff walk and advanced to sec- ond when senior first baseman Haley Nowa- kowski followed with a single to left field. A sacrifice bunt by Pinkstaff advanced the runners, setting the stage for Cramer's game-winning hit. With runners on first and third, howev- er, Richardson struck out freshman right- fielder Madeline Joyce and got sophomore second baseman Sophia Lane to pop out to Abbott to retire the side. In the home half of the inning, back-to- back singles by Morton and Halbrader put runners on first and second bases with one out. But Montgomery proved equal to the task, striking out Richardson and retiring Scott on an infield pop-up to end the inning. Pike Central, however, refused to give up, as Bryant, given new life when Nowakows- ki dropped a foul pop-up, led off the sixth inning with a single to right field. Bryant advanced to second base when Joyce, attempting to throw Bryant out at first, made a wild throw that was retrieved by Pinkstaff in front of the Lady Alices' dug- out. The Lady Chargers' next batter, Morton, after attempting twice, and failing twice, to lay down a bunt to advance Bryant to third base, took a called third strike for the first out of the inning. Bryant subsequently advanced to third on a grounder by Halbrader, but was left stranded there when Richardson hit a hard line drive that was caught, waist high, by Vincennes Lincoln freshman Kyndra Smith. "If that's over 15 feet, it probably goes to the fence, and then it's a whole new ball- game," Weisman said. Montgomery, who walked one and struck out eight as Vincennes Lincoln improved to 10 -9, retired the Lady Chargers in order in the seventh inning. Richardson walked two and struck out nine while taking the loss for Pike Central, dropping her won-loss record to 6 -4. "It kind of hurts, but you can't hang your head with a 1-0 loss," Weisman said. "We had chances. I told (Assistant) Coach (Rach- elle) Johns, I said it was going to be a dog- fight and whoever gets the breaks is going to win." "They've beat some good teams," Weis- man added. "They've beat some teams we're going to have to play. So they're a good team. It's going to be a strong sectional and the draw is going to play an important part there." Bryant had two singles in three at-bats, giving her 16 hits in her last 20 at-bats, an .800 batting average. Halbrader, McCam- mon and Morton had one hit each. The Lady Chargers, who hosted Evans- ville North on Tuesday, May 6, will host South Spencer on Wednesday, May 7, then travel to Barr-Reeve on Thursday, May 8. On Saturday, May 10, the Lady Chargers will host the Pike Central Classic featuring Boonville, Evansville Memorial, Evansville Reitz, Mount Vernon and Tell City. "Next week is going to be tough," Weis- man said. "Everybody's going to have to pitch. Somebody's going to have to pitch a lot. We've got North and then South Spen- cer, a conference game, and then we've got Barr-Reeve on Thursday, and then we start that tournament, weather-permitting. We'll just see what happens."
