"When we start to talk about PVC decking, many don't even know about that option," she said. Like some other design firms, Kirch Improvements offers a 3-D rendering of a proposed deck design before the work begins. "Sometimes the customer agrees right away, and we can go in and install the deck in as little as three days," she said. "Other times, there are a lot of changes, and the back-and-forth discus- sions take longer." There is no such thing as a standard deck, Kirch said. The size of the home, the size of the property, the proposed location, the municipality's setback rules and the property's lot line are among the considerations that have to be accounted for before any work can begin. Most of the decks installed are single layer, but a few customers add a second, smaller step-up area that might be used for an outdoor kitchen or hot tub, Kirch said. Kerzner said homeowners need to be careful about the contractor they choose. "Many of the codes for building decks have changed, especially for those decks attached directly to a home," he said. "Those con- tractors who aren't up to date on the codes end up offering low-ball pricing compared to those who know and follow the codes. That's just not good business." And don't forget about the accessories that can go with adding a deck. According to the Kirch Improvements website, www.kirchimprovementsllc.com, custom benches can easily be added to a deck design. For lower- profile decks, they can also be used on the perimeter, instead of a railing system, to maximize the entertaining space. Stainless steel LED puck lights are another cost-effective option. Composite and PVC decking products even offer matching post lighting. A custom deck with plenty of seating and covered areas is a strong investment in your home. Adding an outdoor kitchen to the decks make it extra equipped for warm-weather celebrations. Pergolas and arbors are easy, less costly additions that can add to a back yard's ambience. They can be featured over a seating area or stand on their own. "An exterior pergola can add elegance to an outdoor area by creating a focal point, as well as provide protection from extreme elements," according to the Kerzner website, www.kerzner- inc.com. "Pergolas offer as much or as little sun filter as desired by the slat direction and spacing. All the exterior elements we con- struct are custom designed to fit each space." Arbors and gazebos are other options to consider. An outdoor living area can be simple with one main focus or have several sections with as many features as desired. Many of the smaller projects to enhance backyards are centered on barbecue islands, shade structures, fire features and anything that is a natural gathering space.
