May 2011 My Two Cents by Jim Koury, Editor tives and in legislatures throughout the country dominated by the same extremists who would take away a woman’s right to choose. The WAR ON WOMEN MUST STOP NOW! Some reading this issue may wonder why an LGBTQ focus publication is standing in soli- darity with Planned Parenthood. I can’t say it any better than Debra Marcus does in her ar- ticle on page 10. Deb is the Chief Executive Officer of Planned Parenthood of South Cen- tral New York, Inc. and she states “Planned Parenthood and the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered (LGBT) community support the same values: freedom of choice, control of our own bodies, and fair legislation respecting the privacy and dignity of all. We agree the government has no business dictating personal morality, and we stand together in the fight for medical privacy, marriage equality, and comprehensive sex education in pub- lic schools.” During the recent budget negotioations in Washington, D.C. the House of Representatives introduced Continuing Resolution 36, a pro- posal to bar Planned Parenthood from receiv- Diversity Rules Magazine PO Box 72 James R. This issue is a very special one. Diversity Rules Maga- zine is PROUD to stand in solidarity with Planned Par- enthood; a most valuable or- ganization that is now being attacked by the extreme right wing of the Republican Party in the House of Representa- ing federal funds to provide preventative health care. The House of Representatives passed the Continuing Resolution while the Senate reject- ed the House’s vile attempts to take away ac- cess to preventative health care services offered by Planned Parenthood such as birth control, breast and cervical cancer screenings, and STI testing and treatment, and HIV testing to pa- tients who are covered by Medicaid and other federal programs. Americans throughtout this great land rasied their voices in support of Planned Parenthood and opposed this extreme and very radical pro- posal from coming a reality. “Grassroots sup- port for Planned Parenthood was widespread and deep.” All progressive Americans should be outraged that the House of Representatives passed Con- tinuing Resolution 36 which was a vote “against women’s access to lifesaving cancer screenings and birth control.” It is appalling and downright scary that an extreme fringe element in Congress would put its very narrow ideological worldview ahead of women’s health and safety. The LGBTQ community, along with other progressive thinking Americans, must continue to combat the extremeists in Congress who are jeopordizing the health and well being of wom- en, especially poor women who do not have the resources to obtain proper medical treatments and preventative health care services. We shall continue to fight the battle. The battle shall be won! Featured in this issue: Cover Story: The War on Women!
