Hospice of Rutherford County is offering a new opportunity for those who would like to volunteer their time with patients. The Meal Time Companion program pairs volunteers with patients at the Hospice House or in nursing homes who may need assistance in eating or would just like social interaction at meal times. Due to illness, inability to feed themselves, prolonged time needed to eat a meal or a lack of companionship can make meal time less than pleasurable for some Hospice patients. The goal of the Meal Time Companion program is to provide a quality meal time experience which will foster dignity and provide a pleasurable eating experience while maintaining their nutritional intake for as long as possible. "Unfortunately, several of our residents have families who are unable to visit on a regular basis and the volunteers offered not only assistance with meals, but companionship to these residents at a time in their lives when they needed it most," said Wanda Swink, director of nursing at White Oak Manor in Rutherfordton. Susie Byers, who began volunteering with Hospice of Rutherford County in February, is serving as a meal time companion. In her experience, just being there for support is important for patients. "Mostly, I'm there for companionship," she said. Meal time companions are also an encouragement to patients, Swink added. "Some of the residents receiving this service were very confused and the volunteers provided the extra attention and patience needed to encourage those who were at an increased risk for weight loss to take one more bite or just another sip," Swink explained.
