By Sara Martínez e border between the U.S. and Mexico is a fascina- ting place where two coun- tries and their cultures colli- de and cross-pollinate. Here are some newer tit- les that bring that dynamic to life within their pages: Mexico's border with Arizona - e Crossers by Philip Caputo. is novel is an engrossing read that wea- ves early 21st century, post 9/11, with early 20th cen- tury history. Gil moves to his family's ranch on the Arizona border with Mexico to find solace after the 9/11 bombings. Instead he finds another war that holds no easy answers confronting drug smugglers, victimized immigrants and his own family's history of culpabili- ty/complicity. Into the Beautiful North by Luis Alberto Urrea [avai- lable in Spanish as Rumbo al Hermoso Norte]. is novel begins in Mexico and follows Nayeli North to find her own band of Magnifi- cent Seven (after watching the classic movie) to save her native pueblo which has been abandoned by all the men. With New Mexico - e Guardians by Ana Castillo. A luminous read – a woman and her mys- tical nephew along with some helpers search for her brother who hadn't made it back across the border this last time. With Texas - Summer of the Maripo- sas by Guadalupe García Mc- Call. For younger readers, this Mexican American ver- sion of the Homer's Odys- sey takes readers across the border into Mexico after 5 sisters discover a dead body and decide to take it home. Along the way, the young women encounter magical situations involving Mexi- can folk characters, such as La Llorona. e Son by Philipp Me- yer. is book is similar to e Crossers in that it wea- ves history with current happenings which paints the story of a border family that once again holds no easy answers and no inno- cents. Also similar to the novel Giant by Edna Fer- ber (the classic movie sta- rred James Dean) in that it follows the fortunes of an old Texas oil family and their participation in that state's unique history and its treatment of the Nati- ve Americans and Mexican communities living there throughout the centuries. Everything Begins & Ends at the Kentucky Club by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. is collection of short sto- ries won the 2013 PEN/ Faulkner Award for Fiction. e Kentucky Club saloon, two blocks south of the Texas-Mexico border, ser- ves as the focal point for these stories about all types of borders and boundaries. Of special note – Although not set di- rectly on the border: Kind of Kin by Rilla As- kew. Askew's novel about an Oklahoma family at the center of the vortex that was unleashed with the implementation of harsh immigration laws that fo- reshadowed harsher laws in Arizona and other sta- tes does take place where cultures clash and was no- minated for the Oklahoma Book Award. Robert John Brown, an ornery local far- mer who has found religion and a conscience has been busted for hiding undocu- mented workers from the chicken processing plant in his barn which sets off a chain of events that has a profound effect on his fa- mily and community. Visit your local library and check out one of these titles (or all of them) to get a nuanced and textured view of the complex and captiva- ting U.S.-Mexico border.
