Member of The Associated Press and CNHI News Service Editor’s Note My friends and I were called “hipsters” the other weekend outside a bar in Providence. We, four journalists and a website guy, are more nerdy than hip, but we might have given off the impression of hip- ness _ two of my friends were wearing black, thick-rimmed glasses and grandpa cardi- gans, and I think someone might have been smoking American Spirits. But, hipsters are on a dif- ferent level when it comes to indie rock commentary and a “retro” way of living that includes mustaches, ugly ’90s sweaters and photography with non-point-and-shoot cameras (lots of hipsters seem to like taking “artsy” photos). Birds, too. Hipsters seem to like birds, as pointed out by a Scene contributor. 2 O-Town Scene April 21, 2011 Hipsters inspired a popular blog post last year of a hipster dinosaur coloring book, where someone colored a regular di- nosaur coloring book to make the dinosaurs hipsters wearing things like tight, cut-off jeans and saying things like “Elliott Smith was a GEEENIUS.” It was creative and funny. It inspired the Scene’s Springtime Dinosaur coloring contest, which entries are due by this Friday. We wanted to give readers a chance to get kid-like and creative, and win money _ the grand-prize win- ner will receive a cash prize of $200. We have received entries from those ages 18 to 82 from all four counties in our coverage area and beyond. People have submitted lady dinos, psychedelic dinos, Easter-themed dinos, talking dinos and others. Staff from all departments at The Daily Star have been invited to judge the entries, and the winner and runners up will be published in next week’s issue of the Scene. In this issue, we feature new upscale steakhouse Prime 289, which opened last weekend in a renovated space on Main Street in Oneonta where the Sego wine bar used to be. People have been talking about the restaurant for months, and it’s something new and different, which makes it newsworthy. With steaks costing in the $30 to $40 range, some question whether it’s too pricey for the community. Time will answer that, but the amount of work and thought that went into opening the restaurant is im- pressive. And having a differ- ent dining option in town is a good thing, variety usually is. Happy Easter and belated Passover to those who prac- tice. And happy spring to everyone. Cassandra Miller
