"At the last library board meeting, the president said he would like to see what kind of support there is out there," said Terry Beadles, pastor of the General Baptist Church in Winslow. "So I got to thinking, the best way to do that's probably through a pledge program. So I just went ahead and got it start- ed." As of Tuesday, April 8, Beadles said he had received more than 100 pledges, rang- ing from as small as $5 to as large as $1,000. "What I've been telling them is, even if it's just $5, with their name on the paper, it shows they're for it," Bea- dles said. Beadles said that he has been turned down by only eight people who he's con- tacted. "And four of them were because they didn't have the money," Beadles said. "I think that's a pretty clear in- dicator to the library board what kind of support we have." Beadles started his one- man pledge drive on Wednes- day, March 12, the day after the Pike County Public Li- brary's Board of Directors – by a 3-2 vote – voted to cancel an auction of the former Bar- rett Memorial Library build- ing that had been scheduled for Wednesday, April 9 and to give it to a local organization after allowing the organiza- tion time to obtain its 501(c) (3) tax-exempt status. "I literally worked one afternoon and had over $5,000," Beadles said. "I mean, everybody wants it." On Thursday, April 3, the Pike County Genealo- gy Society – which is still in the process of obtaining its 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status to make it eligible to take charge of the building – for- mally named a fundraising committee comprised of Bea- dles, Tom Behme, Rick Mi- ley and Cindy Gaskins. "At that meeting, when I brought it up and showed what I'd done, the whole bunch there all said, 'I want one of those papers,'" Bea- dles said. "So I don't know how many pledges we've got now, but there's about 15 of them going around out there." Beadles admitted that even he was surprised at how successful his pledge drive has been thus far. "I couldn't hardly be- lieve that just nobody was arguing," Beadles said. "I thought I'd have quite a bit of opposition, and I only had one that really argued with me, and that was about rais- ing taxes. I told him, well, if it's given to the genealogy society, and out of the hands of the county, it's not going to raise taxes either. That's the only one that's really said why they didn't want to see it done. "Everybody that's pledged has said they didn't know what (the library board) is thinking there, they didn't know why they don't want to do this," Beadles added. "I tell them, 'I don't know if it's politics, I don't know if it's just two people being contrary, but I do know the county wants it.'" Individuals interested in making a pledge can con- tact Beadles by phone at (812) 582-0290 or by e-mail at trbeadles70@yahoo.com. More than $8,000 pledged for history center Veale Creek Players offer summer camp beginning June 23 Veale Creek Players will be offering a summer arts camp, catering to campers ages five to 13 who want to immerse themselves in the Performing Arts. Our goal is to enable theatre-loving kids to develop their confidence, character and presentation skills through ensemble per- formance. Cady Roberts will be di- recting the camp once again this year. She is a sopho- more in college who has per- formed in numerous produc- tions while in high school at Pike Central and in col- lege at Vincennes Univer- sity. From attending these schools, she is versed not only in the onstage expe- rience, but also the techni- cal side of performances as well. She has many things planned for the campers and is very excited to be teach- ing the camp this year. The camp consists of five days (30 hours) of instruction in singing, acting and danc- ing. The program will culmi- nate in a special on-stage, va- riety show performance for family and friends on Friday evening, followed by a cast party. The package includes an official Veale Creek Play- ers Kids Camp T-shirt and two tickets for the variety show performance. The pro- gram is open to all skill levels with no previous experience necessary to enroll. Due to popular demand, we offer two unrelated weeks of camp. For the first time, we will have a cast par- ty right after Friday night's performance where all guests attending the per- formance are invited. The first week of camp will be June 23 through 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The second week of camp will be July 7 through July 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost is $50 per child.
