Velot asenior staff writer TRADING UP: This year’s Consumer Electronics Show, a huge trade show, saw 140,000 people walk through the Las Vegas Convention Center. Vegas No. 1 Spot For Trade Show Business NO OTHER CITY COMES CLOSE, ACCORDING TO REPORT By Amanda Finnegan staff writer Las Vegas remained the top U.S. destination for trade shows in 2010, according to a report released by the Trade Show News Network. The city hosted 60 of the 250 largest trade shows on the 2010 TSNN U.S. Trade Shows list, despite seeing a decline in trade show attendance in recent years due to the recession. The 60 shows spanned nearly 20.7 million square feet of convention space. “Las Vegas was built to host events and maintaining our position as the No. 1 trade show destination | 4 APRIL 2011 | reinforces the commitment and dedication of everyone who works in the industry,” Rossi Ralenkotter, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, said in the report. Orlando took second place with 25 shows and Chicago was third with 22 shows on the Top 250 list. In addition to having the most trade shows on the list, Las Vegas hosted two of the nation’s three largest trade shows, TSNN said. The Consumer Electronics Show, held each January , had more than 140,000 in attendance this year. The Association for Manufacturing Technology’s biennial tradeshow in Chicago ranked No. 2, spanning 1,137,375 square feet. TWO OUT OF THREE AIN’T TOO SHABBY The Consumer Electronics Show was the largest convention held in the country last year, according to the report, spanning 1,442,000 square feet at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The convention center also hosted the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute expo, which was deemed third-largest. How successful do executives of Mexican discount air carrier Volaris think its new nonstop air service between Guadalajara and Las Vegas will be? Successful enough to announce on the day of its inaugural fl ight that it is adding service on May 20. The fast-growing Toluca, Mexico- based airline announced that it would add two more round-trip fl ights a week between Mexico’s second-largest city and McCarran International Airport. The new fl ights will operate Fridays and Sundays in addition to the daily service that began last week. Volaris CEO Enrique Beltranena, one of the passengers on the inaugural trip from Guadalajara, said three factors contributed to the heavy bookings leading to the startup: SEE VOLARIS PAGE 17 JOBS CONSTRUCTION IMPROVING, BUT STILL LAST IN U.S. By Buck Wargo staff writer Nevada’s construction employment increased in January and February but that hasn’t stopped the state from losing the most construction jobs in the nation over the past year. Nevada is the 50th ranked state in construction employment , according to statistics released by the Associated General Contractors of America. The bright spot is that since December, construction employment is no longer falling in Nevada. The number of construction jobs rose by 200, to 57,000, SEE JOBS PAGE 17 9.4% Percentage drop in construction employment from February 2010 to February 2011, when jobs decreased from 62,900 to 57,000.
