dangerous, but it's a huge inconvenience for shoppers and mall employees." At this week's meeting, B.U.S.S. Coalition members discussed some of the most recent developments, including a recent statement from Simon that noted persons with mobility issues can have front door access through the county-run Transit Plus service. While the regular Milwaukee County Transit System routes are no longer per- mitted to drop passengers off in front of the mall, the Transit Plus service, with far fewer riders, is not part of this stipulation. But Jursik took aim at Simon's state- ment, pointing out only a small population of persons with disabilities and the elderly are even eligible to use the specialized para- transit services. "We do not treat our elderly, disabled and impaired citizens in this manner," Jursik said. "For Simon to suggest that paratransit provides sufficient access to the mall is disingenuous at best and dangerous to the disabled at worst." During Tuesday's meeting. B.U.S.S. Coalition members discussed a series of next steps in their advocacy efforts, which will include meeting with municipal lead- ers in the Village of Greendale. Jursik, whose supervisory district includes a large chunk of the county's southern end, pointed out Greendale offi- cials have provided $15.8 million in tax- incremental financing district dollars to spur new development at Southridge – including the new Macy's department store and perimeter, freestanding shops at the edge of the property. Jursik's concerns have been echoed by a number of other county supervisors. Other organizations that have decried Simon's decision include the Milwaukee County Department of Aging and such disability rights organizations as IndependenceFirst. Efforts to reach Southridge management for comment Wednesday morning by The Post's deadline were unsuccessful. But Mary Mokwa, Southridge's general manag- er, has previously issued a statement on the matter. "We remain committed to everyone's safety at Southridge Mall, and this change has improved pedestrian safety and traffic flow for our visitors," Mokwa said in the statement. 2 • Milwaukee County Post • March 28, 2014 volume 20, issue number 13 The Milwaukee Post (ISSN 1544-1776) is published weekly by Conley Media, Milwaukee County 3397 South Howell Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53207 For all departments call: 414.744.6370 news display and advertising FAX: 414.744.6884 Classifieds: 800-762-6219 ext. 5005 Classified Fax: 262-334-6252 For display advertising inquires: Daryl Skaradzinski: General Manager - ext. 13 dskaradzinski@conleynet.com For editiorial inquires: Dwayne Butler: Editor - 262-513-2626 dbutler@conleynet.com POSTMASTER: Send address changes to the Milwaukee Post 3397 S.
