Page 2 - Rutherford Weekly 828-248-1408 By KEVIN CARVER The Final Four takes place Saturday and then the championship on Mon- day, but unfortunately, the ACC and all North Carolina schools have been eliminated from the tourney. Duke succumbed to a major drubbing by Arizona last Friday in the Sweet 16. Who saw that coming? While North Carolina lasted until the Elite 8 as they were ousted by Kentucky. One glaring stat stands out in Kentucky’s win. Despite producing the same amount of fi eld goals (27), Kentucky was 12-for-22 from 3-point land, while UNC was 3-for-16. In other words, a Wildcat 66-57 edge in points by fi eld goals. However, this year’s Final Four will consist of UCONN versus Kentucky and the two darlings left dancing... Virginia Commonwealth playing Butler. Butler played in the title game last year as they lost to Duke. Let’s face it, Butler, a school of 4,200 students has nothing else to prove, but still have their sites set on a title. VCU has been impressive them- selves as they got past a play-in game and now their defense has set the tone in four more victories to get to the Final 4. UCONN and Kentucky (7) have won 9 national titles between them, so one has to fi gure they will be the favorites depending on which of them win on Satur- day. Beware locals, a big softball game comes Friday afternoon, when the undefeated ladies of Chase (7-0) visit East Rutherford in a 2A showdown. East Rutherford, who is currently 2-3, defi nitely is a better team than their record indicates, but Chase has been on quite a tear so far. Chase hasn’t given Brought to you by: to you by: www.rutherfordweekly.com Where t Begin? Where to Begin? up more than three runs in a contest since its season opening win over Crest and is scoring an average of 7.5 runs per game. A much anticipated East-Chase (6-3) baseball game will be at East Rutherford (10-0) on April 4th at East. R-S Central baseball has broken the ice and back in the hunt to claim the No. 1 playoff seed in the 3A por- tion of the South Mountain Athletic Conference. The Hilltoppers won twice last week with wins over 3A opponents Freedom and Patton. Runs have been hard to come by for Central in the early season, but outscored two opponents last week by a combined 24-3. Thomas Jefferson sophomore, Anna Dedmon now has 28 goals in nine game this season as the Lady Gryphons are 7-0-2 so far this season in girls soc- cer. NASCAR goes to Martinsville’s half-mile this week- end. For those who like contact sports, tune into Fox on Sunday or a buy a ticket and travel 3 hours north. No matter what, either choice you make is well worth it. By the way, I want to back up for a second if I may. A year from now, we could see a new Rutherford County all-time scoring leader in basketball. Fran- ces Hernandez of R-S Central holds that record with 1,975 points, but rising R-S Central senior, Shannon Hines is embarking on that mark. At the moment, Hines has 1,513 points in her high school career and needs just 463 points to break it. The past two seasons, the Lady Hilltopper guard has put up 574 and 572 points respectively.
