Jon Richards is the only candidate for attorney general not currently serving as a district attorney, but he said he is proud of his record as a lawmaker and plans to build his campaign on it. "It's a long record of working to keep Wisconsin safe and that's what we're going to keep talking about in this campaign," he said during an interview with The Post. The Milwaukee Democrat was raised in Waukesha and graduated from Waukesha North High School. He said he feels there is a responsibility to give opportunities like the ones he had to everyone in the state. "To me, I learned the Wisconsin Way here in Waukesha and I want to make sure we have a state that's as good and as fair and as decent as the people who live here," Richards said. He said there will be a number of issues that become prominent during the campaign including the role of the attorney general, heroin use, drunk driving, protecting chil- dren and making information available. Richards is one of three Democrats vying for the seat. Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne and Jefferson County District Attorney Susan Happ are the others. Waukesha County District Attorney Brad Schimel is the lone Republican in the race. The role of the AG Richards made news when the American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit challenging Wisconsin's ban on same-sex marriage by say- ing he wouldn't defend the state's constitu- tional amendment in court. He said the job of the attorney general is Milwaukee Democrat looking to become 'the people's lawyer' See RICHARDS on Page 10 MILWAUKEE COUNTY'S WEEKLY NEWSPAPER MARCH 21, 2014 Richards FREE STORAGE!
