By Kirsten Klahn Special to The Freeman PEWAUKEE – Believe it or not, spring is coming. And the change in seasons means there are ample opportunities for children to shake off the winter months and get active. From art camps to sports, the area offers an abun- dance of options to keep kids active and excited. Jeff Burg, owner of Pewaukee-based KidsSports, said his company is gearing up to start spring programs, followed by classes that run through summer. KidsSports, 1343 E. Wis- consin Ave., Pewaukee, offers curriculum-based, organized and open sports classes for kids, primarily ages 2 through 8, and has soccer, baseball, football, basketball, cheerleading and volleyball options. The spring classes start the week of March 31 and are eight- week programs that run through the end of May. "With an indoor facility, especially with Wisconsin weather where you don't know what you're going to get, kids are guaranteed to have a dry space to play," Burg said. "And, in the sum- mer, we do have a lot of our classes outside, but we also offer some that are indoors." While the prices vary, the average price for an eight- week class is $100. Summer programs begin the second week in June, Burg said, and are 10-week courses. Providing a flexible schedule, especially during the summer months, is key, he said. "Our summer classes are priced so they can miss two classes, for vacation or other things that come up, and not feel like they're paying for something they can't attend," Burg said. Parks programs And, for children hoping to find something that appeals to their artistic side, the Pewaukee Park and Recre- ation Department has plenty of summer options. Tiny Tot Adventure Camps are offered for children ages 3 to 5. Each camp focuses on a different theme, such as in the jungle, land of make- believe, and "gettin' buggy," and consists of stories, activi- ties and crafts, said Monica Kaskey, the recreation super- visor for the Pewaukee Park and Recreation Department. The first tiny tot camp runs from June 23-26. The fee is $24 per camp for residents and $34 for nonresi- dents, said Kaskey, who rec- ommends registering early as the camps fill up quickly. Safety Thursdays, a new program the recreation department is offering this year, is for ages 4 to 6. Chil- dren can join local police officers, firefighters and other staff at the firehouse and police department to learn how to be safe in the community.
