things," he says.
His special appreciation of wood goes
back to his childhood, when his father
worked for a forest products company
in British Columbia. "I'm really into sal-
vaging the story. Let the piece of wood
speak to you," he advises. He believes in
preserving the characteristics that reflect
the history and shares an adage from
Heritage Salvage: "If it has a blemish,
make it a feature. Don't try to hide it."
If a piece of wood has a saw mark, for
example, he'll keep it instead of sand-
ing it out. In addition, he never uses any
stain, preferring to let the wood speak
for itself.
Deakin and Heritage Salvage's team
of craftsmen love "designing outside the
box" to create unique pieces from re-
claimed materials, he says. A dining table
from reclaimed wood, for instance, could
be either rustic or elegant. "All of these
things are possible with barn siding," he
says, and adds, "If you can draw it on a
bar napkin, we can build it."
Deakin says he and his team will do
anything to help people who have the
urge to make things from reclaimed
items themselves, and he recalls a couple
about to get married who wanted to
make a sign. The solution: an old win-
dow with glass they could paint.
"We're such a throw-away society.
Don't throw it away if it can be useful,"
he says.
