Come see what separates us from everyone else By Arthur Thomas Freeman Staff BROOKFIELD – A group raising money to improve the concession stand and restrooms at Brookfield Central High School's athletic facilities has nearly reached its $420,000 tar- get and hopes to raise enough to start con- struction this summer. Central4ward needs to raise $30,000 by April 1 to have the proposed 1,000-square-foot facility built by the start of school in fall 2014, said Tom Knopp, chair of the parent-led capital campaign. "If we miss this April 1 deadline for fundraising, we can't engage the contractors to build it this summer," he said. The Central4ward campaign was created to improve the school's athletic facilities. It started with installing a new baseball field and is now focused on the concession pavil- ion. The next steps include new tennis courts and a softball field, then walkways and site improvements. There are preliminary bud- gets in the works for the future projects, but right now the focus is on the pavilion. The school currently has portable bath- rooms with no running water and what Knopp described as a "wooden shack" for concessions. "Those are the current outdoor facilities we offer our guests," said Knopp, who has two sons at Brookfield Central and two daughters who will attend the school in the future. "Our facilities are the worst in the Greater Metro Conference." He said nearly all schools have facilities with running water, electricity and heat, and quality facilities and high schools draw peo- ple to communities. Knopp said the current facilities would have even been considered substandard when they were built in the 1960s. He said the district is considering adding new bleachers if the concession facilities are built this summer. Much of the fundraising has come from selling bricks and other elements of the new pavilion, Knopp said, noting this was a way to get the community involved with the pro- ject. "We had a great deal of success with that program," he said, noting the rest of the fundraising came from more traditional solic- itations.
