Van Cleave won the 200- yard individual medley in 1:53.98, improving on last year's third-place finish. Van Cleave won his sec- ond straight 500 freestyle, tying DeForest junior Nick Potter in 4:39.82. Brookfield Central senior Brian Borden experienced a rewarding state swan song, finishing fifth in the 100 breaststroke (59.16) and sixth in 200 individual med- ley (1:55.04) at the Division 1 meet. Borden's career state medal count is four as a member of the Brookfield co-op squad. "This feels good," Borden said. "Going into the race, I was hoping I could go a lit- tle faster than I did, but I'm happy with my times and my places. "My four seasons with Coach (Bill) Twitchell have been amazing. Com- peting here and placing in front of the big crowd feels just amazing. It makes you feel like all of your hard work is going into one day." – Freeman Staff STATE BOYS SWIMMING AND DIVING By Andrew Wagner Freeman Correspondent MILWAUKEE – Down six heading into the final quar- ter, Dan Wandrey made it clear to his team that it was in a prime position to win. The Brookfield Central High School girls basket- ball team heeded their coach's advice, pulling ahead in the waining moments for a 63-58 victory over Divine Savior Holy Angels last month – the Lancers' second victory over Greater Metro Confer- ence-leading DSHA during the GMC season. "They had scored a lot of points on us," Wandrey said. "I told them we just had to make them work a little harder and get some stops. I just felt that if we cleaned some things up, we've got enough weapons." Wandrey had plenty of reason for optimism at that point. Trailing by as many as 11 after DSHA freshman guard Rachel Heinrich sank 3-pointers on back-to- back possessions with two minutes left in the third period, the Lancers came back with long balls of their own. First, senior forward Nicole Hinz connected from the corner to make it 43-36 DSHA with 32 seconds left. Then, with the seconds ticking off, senior forward Jasmine Lewis banked in a 3 at the buzzer to make it a 45-39 game heading into the final quarter. "We were doing a lot of really good things at the beginning, we just weren't shooting the ball real well," Wandrey said. "We were doing everything right, just not making baskets. In the second half, we weren't as crisp or as good, but we just started making baskets." With momentum on their side, the Lancers still faced an uphill battle over the final eight minutes. DSHA senior Arike Ogun- bowale – one of the top players in not only the state but the nation, who is aver- aging 23.6 points per game – started to really get into a rhythm and dropped in nine in the quarter. But Ogunbowale, who fin- ished with 22 points, also was called for a crucial traveling call with the game tied at 58-58 and 24.5 sec- onds remaining. Central got the ball into Hinz, who drew a foul from freshman guard Ovi Young and hit both free throws, giving the Lancers a three- point lead. "It was a lot of focus," Hinz said. "Sometimes we just freak out in situations like that, but we did a good job of just staying calm and playing our game." Hinz finished with 13 points as did freshman guard Caroline Busch and junior guard Emma Brauer. Senior guard Lydia Rhode led Central with 15 points. "They were feeling it and getting confident, but you can't just stand there and let them shoot," Wandrey said. "We matched up and our kids did a really good job on defense. We really had to dig down, but we had good some good stops, grabbed some rebounds and we made our baskets."
