By DWAYNE BUTLER Post Editor MILWAUKEE – Gregory Thornton, superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools, was officially named the new CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools on Tuesday. Details of his starting date have yet to be determined. "There are defining points in one's career and one's life, and opportunities like this one, to really transform the lives of children, come along rarely," Thornton said in a statement through Baltimore City Public Schools. "Baltimore's school district is in an exciting place, where there is work underway and a strong base of community support in place to change the future for our children." Thornton replaces Andrés Alonso, who resigned in June after six years with the dis- trict. "Dr. Thornton is the right person at the right time for City Schools," Board Chair Shanaysha Sauls said. "We have a solid foundation of progress, and we are now building on that progress through the implementation of long-term reforms in areas where Dr. Thornton has deep experi- ence and demonstrated expertise." Thornton, 59, has been MPS superintend- ent since July 2010. Last year, he signed a contract extension with MPS through June 2016. "We are extremely grateful to Dr. Thornton for his tireless efforts to improve outcomes for students in Milwaukee Public Schools," Milwaukee Board of School Directors President Michael Bonds said. "MPS has made significant progress under Dr. Thornton's leadership. He is one of the top superintendents in the nation and has done a phenomenal job. He will be missed." Under Thornton's tenure, MPS' gradua- tion rate increased, as did the number of students attending college and receiving col- lege scholarships, according to a MPS news release. Student scholarships for the class of 2013 topped $24 million, up from $18 million the year before, it added. Additionally, a release said MPS students DID YOU KNOW?
