Oh sure, that change can be jarring, without a doubt. But really, it's what's under- neath that counts, right? It's much like this tasty delight that's come out of Canada in the past few weeks. Just like down here, "Chopped" is one of the Canadian Food Network's biggest shows, and with the success that the specialty channel's had with another homegrown adaptation ("Top Chef Canada's" been a big hit north of the border), the only surprise is that it's taken this long to get a Canadian version of "Chopped" onto the cutting board. Luckily for "Chopped" fans a bit further south — and goodness knows, there's plenty of us — our own Food Network has been air- ing the episodes on Thursday evenings, with the next one hitting the screen on Feb. 13. So, just what's different about the Canadian "Chopped?" Well of course they've gone with a homegrown host; there's nary a Ted Allen in sight. Instead, Canadian-American actor Dean McDermott walks the chefs through their paces. Though he's no trained chef, McDermott proved his culinary chops when he won the second season of "Rachael vs. Guy: Celebrity Cook-Off" last year. The judges, too, are different, although some of the faces may be familiar. Chef Chuck Hughes has battled it out in "Iron Chef America," was a contestant in "The Next Iron Chef: Super Chefs" and has his own show on the Cooking Channel, "Chuck's Day Off." Chef Lynn Crawford's also fought it out in "Iron Chef America's" Kitchen Stadium, and last year she competed in Bravo's "Top Chef Masters." Susur Lee's been hailed by "Food & Wine" magazine as one of the world's best chefs, and he'll be taking a spin at the judges table, too, along with Roger Mooking ("Everyday Exotic"), Michael Smith ("Chef at Home") and Canadian culinary experts Vikram Vij, Anne Yarymowich and John Higgins. Now in its 18th season, the "Chopped" phenomenon continues to rake in audiences. Whether or not "Chopped Canada" has that kind of staying power is anyone's guess, but the interest sure is there: the premiere episode drew in the Canadian Food Network's highest ratings for any series premiere — ever. It's "Chopped" with a Canadian twist, and it's air- ing Thursday nights on the Food Network.
