December's 5.7 percent jobless rate is seven-tenths of a percentage point lower than the 6.4 percent unem- ployment rate Pike County recorded in November. Pike County's December jobless rate is the county's lowest since October 2008, a span of 62 months, when it was also 5.7 percent. According to estimates released by the Indiana De- partment of Workforce De- velopment, 5,455 of Pike County's labor force of 5,787 were employed during De- cember, leaving 332 persons without jobs. In December 2012, when Pike County's jobless rate was 8.6 percent, it was esti- mated that 5,218 of the coun- ty's labor force of 5,709 were employed, leaving 491 per- sons without jobs. In December 2012, Gibson County's job- less rate was 7.7 percent. • Knox County's jobless rate fell from a revised 5.7 percent in November to a preliminary 4.8 percent in December. In December 2012, Knox County's jobless rate was 7.3 percent. • Warrick County's job- less rate fell from a revised 5.7 percent in November to a preliminary 5.2 percent in December. In December 2012, Warrick County's job- less rate was 7.0 percent. Statewide, county non- seasonally adjusted unem- ployment rates increased in 74 counties, decreased in 14 counties and remained the same in Miami, Ripley, Van- derburgh and Wabash coun- ties from October to Novem- ber. Dubois County registered the state's lowest unemploy- ment rate during November at 5.2 percent, which was up one-tenth of a percent- age point from 5.1 percent in October. Fayette and Vermillion counties, meanwhile, tied for the state's highest un- employment rate in Novem- ber at 9.9 percent. Columbus had the state's lowest metropolitan statisti- cal area jobless rate in No- vember at 5.3 percent in No- vember, which was up one- tenth of a percentage point from 5.2 percent in October. Lafayette recorded the sec- ond-lowest MSA jobless rate in November at 6.5 percent, which was up two-tenths of a percentage point from 6.3 percent in October. The Evansville MSA job- less rate in November was 6.6 percent, which was up one-tenth of a percentage point from 6.5 percent in October. In November 2012, the Evansville MSA's jobless rate was 7.1 percent. Michigan City record- ed the state's highest MSA jobless rate in November at 8.9 percent, which was up three-tenths of a percent- age point from 8.6 percent in October. Terre Haute had the second-highest MSA job- less rate in November at 8.8 percent in November, which was up two-tenths of a per- centage point from 8.6 per- cent in October. Indiana's seasonally ad- justed unemployment rate for November was 7.3 per- cent, which was down two- tenths of a percentage point from 7.5 percent in June and is lower than all neighboring states. The state's jobless rate was 8.4 percent in No- vember 2012. The seasonally adjust- ed national unemployment rate for November was 7.0 percent, which was down three-tenths of a percent- age point from 7.3 percent in October. The nation's job- less rate in November 2012 was 7.8 percent. According to information released by the Indiana De- partment of Workforce De- velopment, Indiana gained 25,300 private sector jobs in November, the largest one- month increase in the Hoo- sier State on record. All employment sectors saw significant growth, with the exception of the leisure and hospitality sector, which was unchanged from Octo- ber to November. Employment sectors ex- periencing the largest in- creases in hiring over the month were trade, transpor- tation and utilities (+ 6,800), construction (+5,400), man- ufacturing (+4,800) and pro- fessional and business ser- vices (+4,700). Other sectors showing gains in November were fi- nancial activities (+1,300) and private educational and health services (+ 600). To- tal non-farm employment al- so increased from October to November by 25,200. "Today's job numbers are welcome news to every Hoo- sier and are a testament to the hard-working people of our state and the business- es the power Indiana's econ- omy every day," said Gover- nor Mike Pence. "The con- tinued downward trend in unemployment and the sig- nificant growth in private sector jobs demonstrate that Indiana's economy is strong and growing stronger every day." "November was a histor- ic month of job growth in In- diana," said Indiana Depart- ment of Workforce Develop- ment Commissioner Scott B. Sanders. "It is encouraging that fewer Hoosiers are un- employed than in Novem- ber of 2008, and the unem- ployment rate has dropped by more than a percent- age point over the past few months. However, we need to keep the ball moving by strengthening Indiana's pro- growth climate." Jelly-filled donut Muffins By Monica Sinclair My husband loves jelly-filled do- nuts. While we were in Louisville recently, we stopped by Dunkin' Donuts and picked up some jelly- filled munchkins. Let's just say, there were only a few left by the time we got home. While strolling through Facebook this weekend, we stumbled upon this week's recipe. It melds together two of the yum- miest breakfast foods! Enjoy! Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly spray a 12 cup muf- fin pan with cooking spray and set aside. 2. In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, and then the vanilla. Add the flour and baking pow- der and beat on low speed until just combined. With the mixer still on low speed, pour in the buttermilk and mix until well combined. 3. Scoop a few tablespoons of batter into the bottom of each prepared muffin cup. Make a well in the cent- er of the batter with the back of a spoon and place a heaping tablespoon of jelly in the center. Cover the jelly a few more tablespoons of batter. 4. Bake for 25 minutes or until the muffins start to turn a light golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the top comes out clean. Let muffins cool in pan while preparing the glaze. 5. For the glaze, whisk together the powdered sug- ar, buttermilk and vanilla in a small bowl until smooth. Transfer the muffins to a wire rack that's been placed on a baking sheet to catch any dripping glaze. Brush each muffin with a generous amount of glaze going back and brushing on more until all of the glaze has been used. Let glaze set for about 5 minutes and then place a small dollop of jelly on the top of each muffin.
